If it were not for Quebec’s distinct society, English Canada would be part of the United States.
If it were not for the British Crown and Empire, French Canada would be part of the United States.

I'm the rare breed who's made my way from marketing/comms to journalism and not the other way around. Credit to Rudyard, @Sean_Speer and @stuartxthomson for taking a chance on me.
Very proud of what we've built The Hub into these last 5 years. Beyond excited for what's to come
I’m really thrilled to announce that @TheHubCanada’s new managing editor is @lukegraemesmith.
As our second hire in 2020, Luke has been front and center for The Hub’s evolution and growth. His work ethic and editorial judgment have been crucial to its success.

In the profile by Emily Wilson, Carson is cited as having been led to Classics and poetry by picking up a translation of Sappho that included both all the fragments and the Greek. This is the key to her disjointed Imagist style, in which the fragmentary and inexplicable . . . /

The whole purpose here is to divide Canada into bite-sized pieces to be controlled as proxies and eventually swallowed up by the US.

They would be better off.
Alberta and Saskatchewan should separate too.

So umpires are getting scrutinized and lambasted for missing pitches an 1/8” of an inch to an inch off the plate that really isn’t the plate as MLB only counts the back half of home plate. Imagine being told you are wrong by a computer that the pitch you called a strike because it caught the front half of the plate is actually a ball. Then getting crap from all the younger, nerdy generation because it’s so EZ to tell if a pitch is a strike at 100 mph or a ball from your fucking couch. Get a grip people. They won’t call the real zone because hitters would struggle more than they do now. Imagine that.

#OTD October 2 1944: The Battle of the Scheldt: The Victory That Opened Antwerp
In the autumn of 1944, Allied forces captured Antwerp—one of Europe’s largest ports.
But there was a problem.
Antwerp was about 80 kilometres inland, connected to the North Sea by the Scheldt estuary. German forces still controlled its shores, making the port unusable.
Without Antwerp, Allied armies advancing across Europe faced a growing shortage of food, fuel and ammunition.
Opening the Scheldt fell largely to the First Canadian Army.
Beginning in October, Canadians fought across flooded fields, muddy roads and heavily defended dykes. They crossed the Leopold Canal, cleared the Breskens Pocket and battled their way toward South Beveland and Walcheren Island.
It was a brutal five-week campaign. More than 6,300 Canadians were killed, wounded or reported missing.
But they succeeded.
The Scheldt was cleared, the mines were removed, and on November 28, the first Allied convoy entered Antwerp—led by the Canadian-built freighter Fort Cataraqui.
The Battle of the Scheldt is not as widely remembered as D-Day. But without it, the Allied advance might have stalled.
Canada did more than help liberate Europe.
Canadian forces opened the route that helped make victory possible.

My favourite one of these will always be Vin Scully. Called a game where Connie Mack was the manager (born in 1862) and called a game where Julio Urias was the starting pitcher (born in 1996)

For those who haven't seen it (and there can't be many now) this 20-minute video from 2017 explains some of the evidence used to rediscover the sounds of ancient Greek music.

NB It's not the last word on the subject!
Just a reminder. We can’t “reconstruct” ancient Greek music where it’s lost. But from the substantial sources of evidence, including notated scores, we can form a good idea of the sounds and forms of ancient melody, especially in relation to words and texts.
So it’s perfectly reasonable to create musical structures that might be claimed as the *kind of thing* ancient Greeks would have recognised as idiomatic expressions of their own music, even if those particular structures were never actually heard in ancient Greece.

6 years ago today, Canada’s 17th Prime Minister, John Napier Wyndham Turner, passed away at the age of 91. A Rhodes scholar, politician and father, Turner also held the Canadian 100 metre sprinting record, qualified for the 1948 Canadian Olympic team and came close to being engaged to Queen Elizabeth II’s younger sister, Margaret, at one point. 🇨🇦
