What I find interesting is that अराजकता (arājaktā), the Hindi word for anarchy, literally means “the state of being without a king”. The concept of Arājaka has its roots in the Mahabharata, which describes six characteristics of this state:

After coming home from school, my brother and I used to watch this, and it was our ritual to sing along to the theme song in unison.

I always think about how the 18 year old me would think of who I am today. He would certainly be a bit surprised by my career path, but all in all, I think he would be happy. Although there were certain stupid notions that I held when I was 18, so on that account, he might be a little disappointed to see that I’ve outgrown some of the things he once believed in.

One of the many tragic consequences of large-scale migration from eastern UP (probably true of other regions in eastern India as well) is the decline of village Ramleelas. During my father’s time, almost every other village used to organise its own Ramleela. But organising a Ramleela is no small feat. It requires people with the time, skills, and commitment to sustain the tradition. As significant number of such people migrated out of the region, there are simply not enough competent people left to keep the tradition alive. The result is that most village Ramleelas have now been discontinued. In their place, we now have Durga pandals, which are not nearly as complex to organise. As a result, there has been a great upsurge in their numbers.

Nothing wrong with Durga pandals, though. If I had my way, I’d want both.

“People who have earned no pride in themselves, are content to be proud of their cities through other men. The end will be that the city has nothing left for pride, except the dead, who were proud less easily”

Great discovery! If we find further evidence that corroborates this finding, we might have to rethink the chronology of Gupta expansion into Gujarat. The established view is that the Guptas expanded into Gujarat during the reign of Chandragupta II, with the expansion beginning in the latter half of his reign and being completed only under Kumaragupta I. But this copperplate grant suggests that the Gupta expansion into Gujarat may have begun towards the end of Samudragupta’s reign or at the very beginning of Chandragupta II’s reign. Fascinating stuff!
🧵 Discovery of a new Gupta era copper plate from Gujarat: Last week, a new copper plate from Gujarat was brought to my attention. The charter was issued in Gupta Saṃvat 57 or 376-77 CE. It consists of 5 lines of writing in Sanskrit language and Gupta script of circa 4th century CE. I have transcribed the plate with the help of Sri Pritam Kumar. While @KushagraAniket ji is meticulously working on its translation. We hope to publish this record soon. 1/2

Read this fascinating piece on the rise and fall of a city that once rivalled Delhi but has since been reduced to an insignificant town.
The largest hoard of Gupta gold coins ever found. A fort of victory. A city that inspired Mughal architecture. From the Gupta Empire to the earthquake that reshaped Bayana’s fortunes, its history spans sixteen centuries of kings, kingdoms, and shifting power. Yet a city once coveted by empires has faded into obscurity. Read Sunny Pandey's Tale as he travels through seventeen centuries of ruins, legends and inscriptions to ask how a city so important came to be forgotten.
