Overjoyed to announce the sale of my first book, Into the Dark Sky, to @LiverightPub. The book is a scientific adventure to find the last dark places on Earth and chronicle the people striving to protect them. It's also a love story about the night✨🔭 #darkskies #astronomy

When all this is over, @realDonaldTrump will be remembered as the greatest traitor to America in its history.
Children in school will learn of his treachery as a warning to future generations. People will spit on the ground when they hear his name. His works will be torn down, one and all.

The Bureau of Land Management approved blasting through 100-foot canyon walls at the entrance to the world's longest art gallery. So oil tankers can drive through it.
Nine Mile Canyon, Utah holds more than 10,000 cultural, historical and archaeological resources, including over 1,000 known rock art sites containing more than 10,000 individual images. People have used this canyon for at least 8,000 years.
The blasting happens in Gate Canyon, the entrance corridor into that gallery. Federal surveys have already found 47 historic sites along this one stretch of road alone. And it's not only the rock art. Threatened Mexican spotted owls use cliff habitat in the canyon, including areas near the proposed blasting. BLM did the minimum environmental review required and barreled ahead anyway, to move oil out of the Uinta Basin faster. Up to 1,000 vehicles a day, roughly half of them heavy tankers.
This isn't BLM's first swing at this road. Duchesne County tried the same realignment in 2015 and again in 2022. Both times, public opposition killed it. This time, BLM posted it quietly in March with no public notice, denied conservation groups' request to even weigh in, and approved it in April anyway.
It's the same playbook that just got this administration stopped at Big Bend National Park, except "stopped" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. There, a judge halted construction October 2nd, but only after bulldozers had already torn through the park’s grounds. A win in court doesn't un-crush what's already crushed.
Three groups sued over Gate Canyon this week. But a lawsuit takes months. A blasting crew takes days.

Thank you @LaikenJordahl for your tireless work to protect and preserve Big Bend NP

A fair question: How did humanity allow Gaza to happen? And the answer is not just about Israel, but also about the role of the US in particular in providing the 2,000-pound bombs and diplomatic support that resulted in this. Democrats and Republicans alike bear responsibility.
Years from now, my grandkids will ask me how humanity allowed Gaza to happen. I still don’t have an answer for them 💔 teapawt.org/mhmd_s09/status/209257…
Russia’s campaign in Ukraine—like Israel’s in Gaza—is nothing more than mass murder. At any other point in US history, we would have done something to end this terrorism. But now, as the Kremlin-owned slime creatures in the WH raid the treasury, we just sit back and watch.
A Russian strike against the building of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. A rescue operation is underway: crews are putting out the fire and searching for people who may have been trapped inside. All services are deployed. Today in Kyiv, a pharmaceutical company and gas stations were also attacked; in Dnipro, a business center; and in other cities and regions, civilian facilities, businesses, and communications infrastructure were targeted as well. Sadly, people have been killed… My condolences to their families and loved ones. Russia will definitely face a response to this. And every one of Ukraine’s partners must see from this terror, from these strikes, that supporting Ukraine means truly supporting people’s lives – supporting the principle that terror must never be normalized, anywhere. Russia must be held accountable for all of this and face real consequences. I thank everyone who helps Ukraine!
Annie Dillard is our greatest nature writer. But her writing on writing always floored me. I used to assign "To Fashion a Text" to my grad students and the discussions would always land on this wonderful meditation. We are richer for her willingness to trade memories for words.
We need more of this energy in holding this criminal administration and its enablers to account. Well done @CoryBooker
Sen. @CoryBooker (D-NJ) calls FBI Director Patel a lackey and argues with @ChuckGrassley (R-IA):
Booker: "What a mockery you are."
Patel: "You are the biggest mockery in the United States Senate."
Grassley: "Are you ready to shut up?"

Trump angered ranchers with unpopular trade policies; now he wants to buy back their support by allowing the killing of endangered wolves.
This compounds a terrible decision to end the recovery program that was rebuilding populations of these iconic species. We will fight it.
The Trump Administration's model of governance at this point is nothing more than a 24-7 trolling operation. Policy is decided by what Stephen Miller, JD Vance, et al. believe will best own the libs. The left loves wolves? Let's let the ranchers kill them. bbc.com/news/articles/c62k67…

These ranchers are welfare queens of the first rank: they graze public lands, not just their own lands, to death; they fence and ravage land that doesn’t belong to them. Then they demand the right to kill any native wildlife that they find inconvenient.
