ENGLAND Sizewell nuclear power station a gross drain on UK taxes, but only now is the problem spotted The UK government’s plan to fund a multibillion-pound nuclear plant at the Sizewell site in Suffolk represents a “terrible deal” for the UK taxpayer over the rest of the century, so says UKGov’s own spending watchdog. This means more debts handed to Scotland it did not accrue but is forced to pay. MPs on the public accounts committee (PAC) have warned the government that the cost of the Sizewell C. nuclear reactor could spiral to almost £48bn, leaving bill payers on the hook to provide an extra £9.8bn to construct the plant before 2040 and a further £12bn over its 60-year operating life. Scots, please take note! Taxpayers and consumers face a “high level of risk”, according to PAC, after the government agreed to take a near-45% stake in the nuclear plant, which is considered a successor project to the heavily delayed Hinkley Point C nuclear plant in Somerset. Under the terms of the multibillion-pound deal, which will be paid for through taxes and energy bills, the UK government holds a 44.9% stake while French state nuclear developer EDF has a 12.5% stake. The rest of the funding has come from private investors including the British Gas owner Centrica, which holds a 15% share, alongside the Canadian investment group La Caisse, which holds 20%, and the investment manager Amber Infrastructure, which has a7.6% stake. The UK government was forced to take a larger than expected share of the project after buying out Chinese state nuclear developer CGN, which had been allowed to hold a 20% stake in Sizewell C before false national security concerns were raised to stop Chinese investment expansion. The watchdog warned that while the UK public could be called on to shoulder multibillion-pound cost overruns, the nuclear project’s private investors will only need to put in an extra £30m. ISRAELI GENOCIDE Scots MP and MSP held by Israeli authorities Two Scottish politicians have said they were detained by Israeli authorities for eight hours while trying to enter the West Bank. SNP MP Lara Bird and Scottish Greens MSP Kate Nevens (pictured) said they were prevented from entering the territory, questioned, and eventually turned away. Bird said in a social media post that they had intended to "stand alongside Palestinians being attacked for harvesting olives on their own land". They had travelled to the region as part of a Progressive International delegation that also included Labour MP Clive Lewis and a former member of the Basque senate. The Israeli military conveniently announced on Monday that all West Bank land crossings would be closed as part of increased security measures during Tuesday's national elections. Posting on Instagram, Bird said the 23-strong group was "interrogated and ultimately prevented from crossing the border". Currently, Israel heads to polls for pivotal election defined by security and democracy, and is hyper sensitive about negative publicity. But evidence is there for all to see, about 2,000 Palestinian residents have been displaced in Hebron, a city in the southern West Bank, in recent days. Footage shared online appeared to show one street being completely flattened by bulldozers. That came as an over-the-top reprisal for the killing of two Israeli soldiers by gunmen. Several other attacks on Palestinians during the annual olive harvest have also been reported in the run-up to the elections.
