I find it hard to ask why there is something rather than nothing without noting that by asking it I have already concluded there is not nothing. The only way this could get tricky is that not nothing may not imply something e.g. in the vacuous case.
Why is there something rather than nothing? Leibniz argued that every possible thing has an inherent tendency toward existence, and the set of possibles containing the "greatest amount" is the one that beats out the others. English translation: leibniz-translations.com/the…

The Wayback Machine risks becoming collateral damage in the fight against AI, writes Internet Archive founder Brewster Kahle in The Atlantic. Blocking the Internet Archive won’t stop AI companies from scraping the web. But it can undermine a vital resource for journalists, researchers, and anyone seeking information that has disappeared or changed. Ridiculous in many ways. A lot of people still smoke. Why hope when you would never sit down and simply hope an investment pays off? How is this any different? Why write this?
We're about to enter a period where not reading or writing becomes as ubiquitous as smoking once was. We can hope people will eventually realize this is bad for them, as they did with smoking. But this is far from certain; the cost may not be as obvious.

This is ridiculous coming from someone who spent the past few decades contributing to this illiterate future. Explaining away your contributions by warning us of their deleterious effects is some kind of wonderful, but not a good kind.

"resistance" is a weaker word than l "countercontrol" or "control" e.g. say "civil countercontrol" or "civil control".

Ever since meeting him years ago now I have enjoyed his reports on changing and unchanging conditions in our capitally controlled world. The paradox of purported surplus and abundance is a hold over from wishful theory and worthless experiments. Triangulate with his thinking:
In 2020, oil went negative and $18 trillion of bonds carried negative yields. Not glitches. Symptoms of too much capital and not enough places to put it. That's the story of my new book, Surplus. Out November 3. Preorder: globepequot.com/978149309665…

Preordered my copy. Marc weaves personal experience with economic intellect into the story of capital control and its consequences.

A world full of people in touch with newly verbal machines are being taken for the same ride each psychic, mystic, and showman puts audiences on when the start "reading". Rampant exploitation of those who otherwise believe themselves scientists and logicians.

It's a real "don't shit where you eat" scenario.
i find it hilarious that after decades of squeezing every last drop of blood out of the middle class, now capitalists are complaining that not enough people are eating at restaurants, taking trips, using airlines, or buying crap from box stores.

What is "embodiment"? It sounds like a house being haunted by a poltergeist or a body being possessed by a demon spirit.
Poll: consider A: I believe our limited lifespan is good because finitude gives our life beauty and meaning B: I would be sad if the modern human embodiment went extinct and was replaced by something else
25%A and B are true
10%I hold A but not B
30%I hold B but not A
35%I hold neither A nor B

Eric Bauza has sadly passed away at the age of 46. The modern voice of Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck alongside many other beloved characters.

I'd say it was just a well enough executed public relations campaign. Read Edward Bernays "Public Relations" and @LawDavF "Strategy". I submit that most Lean formal verification stuff is a present example of a similar process.
Probably a big reason for the popularity of OOP is it made programmers focus on data and types rather than code.

This is literally Quine's conclusion in his chapters on the elimination of singular terms and singular descriptions in "Methods of Logic Fourth Edition."
On another thread I was posting on definite descriptions, so here is a link to an essay with my further views on the topic. At bottom I am deflationist about the semantical disputes, since the various semantics on offer are all expressible from one another. open.substack.com/pub/joelda…

I am afraid of telling people to ask a machine as I used to tell them to search for it. The modern verbal machines are designed to keep you coming back for more just like a casino, a tobacconist, or a drug dealer. If someone says they are selling "the truth" run.
