The population with a viable Mtb infection may be markedly smaller than generally assumed - new modelling study of Mtb self-clearance out today in Proceedings of the Royal Society B:
royalsocietypublishing.org/d…

ALT Figure showing the estimated populations in India, China and Japan with a viable Mtb infection, assuming first lifelong infection and then allowing for self-clearance. The impact is smallest in India (56%, 47–65% uncertainty interval), followed by China (37%, 28–47% UI), with the greatest impact in Japan (27%, 20–37% UI).
A huge thanks to excellent collaborators @alexsrichards, Katie Dale, @CFMcQuaid, @richardwhite321, @justin_denholm and @Rein_Houben

Are you interested in Subclinical TB and what it means for #AdvancingPrevention? Don't know what all the fuss is about? Have your say at menti.com/pe5do8z9mm @StopTB_ETT @Rein_Houben @TomScriba @hanifesmail_tb @JonCEmery @CIDRI_Africa @UnionConference @LSHTM_TB @UCTIDM @FINDdx
Very pleased to see our modelling study of the Diamond Princess published in eLife.
We estimate that ~ 3/4 of infections were asymptomatic and may have contributed substantially to transmission.
Huge thanks to excellent collaborators and the reviewers.

Nice turnout today for the @cmmid_lshtm ECR meeting, thanks @AlxsRobert & @_nickdavies for great presentations on #Measles & #COVID19 ! Two diseases at very different "stages" in their circulation in the population, so two very different research questions...

#OnThisDay 40 years ago, #smallpox was made history.
It's the only human disease to be eradicated so far.
A lesson we must take is: when the 🌍 unites behind science and public health measures we can defeat diseases and protect lives and livelihoods.

Early data suggested around 50% of infections in Diamond Princess were asymptomatic, but @cmmid_lshtm modelling analysis (led by @JonCEmery @Rein_Houben) suggests it could have been higher based on how testing protocols and outbreak dynamics evolved over time
New study estimating that nearly 75% of SARS-CoV-2 infections on the Diamond Princess were asymptomatic, half were never detected and asymptomatic infections may have contributed substantially to transmission. Paper here cmmid.github.io/topics/covid… (NOT YET PEER REVIEWED).
