I feel like my lab just exploded with the start of this new semester and students returning. I've been so impressed with each of them and hope I can help their research experience be a meaningful one!

Thrilled to share latest pub examining effects of IL-10 on midbrain dopamine firing, terminal activity and learned behaviors. Click link for temporary free access. Article will also be made available on pubmed. Thanks to reviewers for excellent feedback! authors.elsevier.com/a/1hRZK…

This excitatory effect is due to postsynaptic decreases in inhibitory currents.

Direct faciliatory effects on dopamine terminals (as measured by voltammetry) were small, but significant. Microdialysis measures of dopamine in vivo were much larger and likely due largely to increased dopamine firing.

First time labeling with a conjugated toxin (blue) worked out great. NAc GABA neurons in green

How do you put multiple optics in a row and align them so that their optical axes agree? This is a thread where I show you how I build a compact Alignment Laser Assembly– the companion to my "Alignment Crane" from a few months ago: xitter.cf/TanFad/status/15591872…
1/? I've had a few people ask me why I prefer @Thorlabs posts over their cages. The argument for cages is self-defeating: supposedly they provide pre-aligned centration, but mechanical tolerances =/= optical tolerances. You end up having to put everything on kinematic mounts...

The nipkow disk is showing up nicely tonight. Each hole is 40um in diameter and acts as a pinhole for the camera. Once the disk starts spinning, the optical sectioning starts happening.

Excellent tutorial for using alignment cranes and stable posts.

These look really fun. Would love to see a Raman Spectroscopy for Babies book.
Just got these for my niece, they are great! Gotta get her into STEM!

This note appeared on my laptop during a zoom meeting. I think it makes a fantastic daily affirmation.

Just submitted some work on intercalated GABA neurons of the BLA. Favorite pic from the work below. Green is GABA. Magenta is mu-opioid receptor IHC. Shoutout to @SteveTJones for the awesome IHC.

Thanks for the shoutout @_annaeverett! It was awesome having you in the lab and your you the best in your future research endeavors.
Not my best writing, but the @BYU Neuroscience magazine (appropriately called “Synapse”) asked me to write some words about my college experience! 💙🧠 neuroscience.byu.edu/0000018…

The last 17 years have been a blast being married to my partner Marianne. One of our children made us this really cool card with anthropomorphized animals depicting us. My bias was to see white lab mice in the pic. In fact, they are polar bears. You can tell bc they are so cool.
