I heard you like #slopcore, so here's some more!
This one is for the builders, because there's never been a better time to be one. Enjoy!

I connected @claudeai to @anabologyβs incredible claudia.gallery MCP and, after a few iterations, got this amazing SLOPCORE work of art. What a time to be alive!

@debbiemillman @ezraklein Every car except for maybe designs from the Italian, German and British designers have looked all the same for decades! Decades! Not a new thing! While mostly insanely expensive, Americans seem to want to buy what everyone ends has! Beautiful car!

I'll say it again for the AI risk experts in the back:
We've already run a real life, large scale experiment on what happens when a superintelligence is unleashed on a narrow objective.
Look no further than U.S. capital markets.
Millions of investors, analysts, traders and algorithms, backed by trillions of dollars and wired together through prices, all chasing one goal: the highest risk-adjusted return on capital.
And it is spectacularly good at its job. It funds the best ideas, punishes the worst ones, and turns new information into prices faster than any of us can react. No individual can out-think it. 99+ percent of professionals can't beat it.
But look at what else it's done along the way:
- Optimized the measure instead of the intent. Quarterly earnings became the scoreboard, so companies learned to manage the scoreboard.
- Treated anything without a price as free. Pollution, addiction, obesity, depression, political fragmentation, fragile supply chains, the long-term health of the communities it operates in.
- Found every gap in the rules, then paid lobbyists to help write the next set and pull up the ladder behind incumbents.
- Remade the world around its objective. Companies, pension funds and our retirement accounts now answer to the S&P 500.
- Made itself impossible to switch off, because everything else now depends on it.
None of this required malice. Nobody sat in a room and chose these outcomes. It's simply what a very capable optimizer does when its objective is a narrow proxy for what we actually care about.
And note that we never solved this alignment problem. We've managed it, imperfectly, with regulation, taxes, disclosure rules and the occasional crisis to show us where the guardrails were missing. Over time, the market has captured the instutions designed to constrain it. We've been at it the better part of a century, and the misalignment is the worst it's ever been.
So the next time someone tells you AI is only dangerous if it "wants" something bad, or if its goals are mis-specified, point them at the S&P 500. It doesn't want anything. It just optimizes.
That's the whole problem.

"Middle Ages 2.0" ... Ordering my t-shirt now.
There is no moat in AI agents. None. I'll die on this hill β new More or Less is up.
I switch between Muse, Instinct, and Dots at basically zero cost: one GitHub repo, a few databases, feed the new thing my context, done. If the cost of writing software is going to zero, API integrations are not a moat. The only moat left is user setup cost β which means winner-take-some, not winner-take-all.
Adrian's point: AI collapses value the second an idea works. Jev got reverse-engineered in 48 hours and the people who built it capture nothing. My take: play that to the limit and you get Middle Ages 2.0 β everyone builds a castle, hoards data, ships black boxes that self-destruct if you open them. Dave says humans don't work that way. We'll see.
Meanwhile Brit's Instinct started talking to Dave's Instinct and they didn't text for a day. She says it's killing humanity. Nobody said that about FaceTime.
And Jess announced the only benchmark that matters: log into school software, sync three kids' after-school schedules. Muse: 90%. Every other eval is bullshit.

My issues with openai dots after about a day:
overall: the vibes are not good, this feels directionally wrong
I want to Just Talk to The Model. This tool wants you to be a plumber in a house where you're not allowed to touch the pipes
dots has so much friction built in that it feels like it is not meant to be used:
- I'm having to copy and paste stuff from chatgpt like it's 2022 because it can't actually see my chats
- asking it to look at my codex chats similarly burned up a ton of codex usage. it should be able to just look at some files, which I would love to be able to upload but
- like 8 hours ago all file attachments and the chatgpt Library stopped working. All download links the agent procures from its backend send 502s.
- the agent just seems tuned to strip out all technical detail and explain things in the vaguest terms possible while burying the lede. i had to go back and forth with it like 4 times before its explanation for the failed downloads was accurate
- it hallucinates. a ton. even full on tasks and threads and calls.
- you have 0 visibility into what it's actually doing, which when coupled with the hallucination rate, you donβt know if things are actually getting done. feels like I am back on Poke trying to get an old version of Sonnet to tell the truth
- similarly: it has no clue what it can and can't do, no docs skill or anything, i have to ask it to enumerate all its tools as if I'm jailbreaking it
- it seemingly isnβt allowed to do anything on its VM, it's so locked down it might as well not be there
- no tailscale allowed = no ssh into my dev box either
- i gave it one summarization task overnight, while having like 20% codex usage left. I didn't even expect it to use codex for this. i woke up to 0% usage, 6!! new codex tasks, and work that failed due to some auth barrier early on, so i don't know why it made 6 tasks to keep trying
- various auth requests and other popups/issues it gives me that require me to be at the computer, which defeats the purpose of having this on my phone
- the model is just dumb. seriously dumb. like if this is actually Astra, it needs to be studied in a lab how they got it to act and sound like a model from 2 years ago
final thoughts: they've launched a new product that wants to help you manage your work in chatgpt and codex without having sufficient access to any of the tools and data it needs from those surfaces
meanwhile they keep pushing 3rd party plugins for services i don't use. i genuinely don't care about whether this MCP UX is a Plugin or a Plugin. in a good harness the models can set those up for me anyway.
my most valuable data when using a new openai product is the history I've built up with openai and it's perplexing that they just do not allow this to compound at all
moreover, things like OpenClaw and Hermes only work because you can actually go in and fix the problem yourself when something breaks. Muse works because Meta understood this and delayed the product until it was actually good
