This paper answers why confident idiots run the world.
Cornell University published a psychological paper that explains every terrible boss, every loud influencer, and every broken corporate hierarchy.
It’s called “Unskilled and Unaware of It.”
they tested participants across logic, grammar, and humor to measure the gap between actual performance and self-perception.
And the results are wild.
participants scoring in the bottom 12th percentile consistently believed they were operating in the 62nd percentile.
they were not lying. they were literally incapable of recognizing their own incompetence.
the paper revealed a brutal paradox:
the exact skills required to master a domain are the exact same skills required to accurately evaluate your own competence in that domain.
if you lack the skill, you inherently lack the cognitive capacity to realize you are failing.
this creates a dangerous systemic loop.
the incompetent are blessed with absolute, blinding certainty. their brain protects them from their own ignorance, allowing them to speak first, demand authority, and never second-guess their decisions.
meanwhile, the actual experts suffer the exact inverse.
top performers in the study consistently underestimated their rank. because a task was easy for them, they falsely assumed it was easy for everyone else.
they hesitate. they obsess over nuance. they assume they have nothing unique to add.
we are biologically wired to confuse confidence with competence.
the loudest person in the room gets promoted, gets funded, and gets the microphone, not because they know what they are doing, but because they are physically incapable of seeing what they don't.
the only defense mechanism is building systems that stop rewarding absolute certainty and start demanding proof of work.

I recommended rejection for a paper that was, in my opinion, AI slop in both content and style. I was satisfied the editorial decision was for rejection, but it concerns me is that none of the other reviewers seemed to find problematic the AI-typical rhetoric. I don’t want to punish AI use automatically, and, indeed, I use AI in some of my own writing. The ideas content should be evaluated for what they’re worth. But in persuasive or semi-persuasive writing like position statements/perspectives (which this was), narrative reviews, or discussions of research articles, I do think reviewers/readers ought to be on the lookout for typical, whole-cloth AI writing that is super slick. I’m talking about out-of-the-box default model output that is unedited by human and scores 100% on Pangram. It can dress up vacuous claims and poor logic trains with vague clickbait statements and sales-pitch verbiage that inflates the importance of the supporting evidence. You see it all over LinkedIn and it’s begun to infiltrate scholarly journals. Editorial norms are still forming on this issue. What do you think?

One reason young people want socialism so much is that they're jealous that older people have it and they don't.

My beloved Smilow Clinic Nurses are the most amazing human beings in the world, the most caring people and caregivers and the most committed humans, who sacrifice everything for their patients. My practice would not be possible without them. My patients would assuredly have worse outcomes without them. Today, they put in extra effort to look up the recipe for “Bienenstich” 🇩🇪 cake and presented me with this epic beauty. I am honored and thankful to work alongside you. Thank you Melanie Glenn , Kelly, and the entire Liver Cancer Smilow Team. ❤️❤️❤️❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️ @SmilowCancer @YaleLiverCancer

Replying to @DMSabatini
@DMSabatini was always kind, professional, and supportive towards me and my lab. He asked great questions in my faculty meetings that I still remember and we still work on :) He retweeted our work when we needed it the most , and told me about the @PershingSqFdn and other funding sources. I just want to say thank you for that support.

Today, my office received a suspicious envelope, similar to those sent to other congressional offices. My staff and I are safe, and law enforcement was notified and intervened right away. Thank you to our law enforcement for their rapid response and commitment to our safety everyday.
There is no excuse for acts of violence or intimidation against elected officials in our country. We have to lower the temperature and rise above the hatred, vitriol and extremism that is seeping into our politics. It prevents us from solving the biggest issues affecting all Americans, regardless of party. My office will continue to serve Nassau County families and not allow this threat to get in the way of that work.

Today, my district office in Chicago received a suspicious package similar to those received by elected officials around the nation. We immediately notified the Chicago Police Department and U.S. Capitol Police, and my office evacuated as a precaution. My staff and I are safe and are working with federal, state, and local law enforcement to support an investigation.
Political violence has no place in a democracy, and efforts to scare or intimidate the public in the lead-up to an election must be resoundingly condemned. I hope that the perpetrator is swiftly brought to justice.

Earlier today, my Congressional Office received an envelope containing a suspicious substance. My team immediately notified the FBI, NYPD, and FDNY, all of which responded promptly. The FDNY tested the substance and determined that it was non-hazardous. We have since turned over the envelope to the FBI, and an investigation is ongoing.
We are living in a time when threats against elected officials and their staff have become the new normal. Although my team is understandably shaken by the incident, we will not be deterred from serving the people of NY-15 in the Bronx.

Today, I received a threatening letter at my Grand Rapids, Michigan office that contained unidentified white powder. The letter, which claimed to be from the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), made a direct and specific reference to an impending “civil war” beginning after the election. The letter sent to my office is similar to those received at other congressional offices across the country. The DSA has not yet addressed the attacks, either to condemn them or to take or deny responsibility. The Grand Rapids Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) responded immediately.
Threats and extremism are not signs of strength—they are signs of a weak mind and weak character. Political intimidation has no place in our democracy, and leaders must condemn it, not excuse it. I’ll keep standing up to bullies on the right and the left.
