5v4 | Defending Wide Areas
📌 Defending in wide areas.
⚙️ Set-Up:
➡️ On a 1/4 of a pitch section up the playing area. Have a larger goal at one end and x 2 manikins at the opposite end.
👕 Teams: ⚫️s & 🟢 (GK) vs 🔴s
🧰 How to Play:
☑️ A GK 🟢, 2 x CBs, 1 x FB and 1 x CM (⚫️s) defend the larger goal. If they win possession, they score by passing the ball off the blue manikins or running the ball between them.
☑️ The 🔴s attack the larger goal. A SK, WM and FB are positioned in the main playing area, whilst a CM (🔴) is placed just along the line just outside of the playing area.
☑️ The 🔴s CM is fixed behind that line until the ball crosses the orange dashed line; at this point, the 🔴 CM can join the attack.
🚧 Constraints:
🏆Reward: Bonus goals for each minute of defending without conceding.
👨🏫 Review: The compactness of the defensive unit to deny scoring opportunities.
🚫 Restriction: A moving offside line for the defenders to practice at different heights.

Here are 9 game-proven coaching principles you can use tomorrow.
I've developed these principles through years of coaching. They guide how I design training sessions, develop players, and approach matches.
They're not formations or fixed playing patterns.
They're behaviours I want players to develop, regardless of the system we play.
#SundayShare
//
1. Forward Mentality
Look forward first. Can you pass, dribble, or combine to progress? If not, keep possession and look for the next opportunity.
2. Bravery on the Ball
Encourage players to receive under pressure, take opponents on, and make decisions. Don't punish every mistake. Players need the confidence to try.
3. Active Defending
Don't just wait for opponents to make mistakes. Close space, apply pressure, challenge for the ball, and make life difficult for the opposition.
4. Technique at Speed
Good technique must work at match speed. Train players to execute actions quickly, under pressure, and with limited time and space.
5. Transition Awareness
When possession changes, react immediately. Win the ball? Look to attack. Lose it? Apply pressure or recover your defensive position.
6. Balance of Individual & Team
Encourage individual initiative while maintaining collective responsibility. Players should recognise when to solve situations themselves and when to use teammates.
7. Courage & Competitive Edge
Demand players who compete. Challenge for duels, fight for second balls, recover after mistakes, and don't shy away from difficult situations.
8. Off-the-Ball Movement
Players without the ball must remain active. Create passing options, move opponents, attack available spaces, and support the player in possession.
9. Desire to Score & Win
Develop players who actively look to create chances, score goals, and win games. Possession should have a purpose. Encourage players to be decisive near goal.
//
One important point:
Don't try to coach all nine principles tomorrow.
Choose 2–3 that your team needs most.
Design training situations where those behaviours are needed. Reinforce them consistently. Gradually increase the difficulty.
The goal isn't for players to remember nine principles.
The goal is for those principles to become visible in how they play.

My @SundayShare10 this week is this.
🔧 TECHNICAL BREAKDOWN — TEL'S SOLO STRIKE vs CHELSEA
📍 Phase 1 — Receiving & Shielding
* Wins back possession ~60m from goal, tight to the left touchline
* First touch: inside of right foot, takes ball away from pressure into open space
* Body positioning: side-on, low centre of gravity, arm out to create separation — physically shrugs off Acheampong without breaking stride
* Key detail: He doesn't dally — one touch sets the direction, momentum is immediately forward
⚡ Phase 2 — Acceleration & Dribbling
* Bursts past the defender using short, quick strides — keeps the within arm's reach but never under his feet.
* Love the fact he drove across the defender as well to slow the player down as he knew if any contact would get a free kick.
* 3–4 touches over ~35m before cutting inside — tight control at top speed
* As he approaches the final third, he checks his run slightly → invites Lacroix to commit → then shifts inside onto his right foot
* Key detail: Eyes stay up the entire run — scanning options, watching the defender's hips
🎯 Phase 3 — The Set & Finish
* Approaches the box, opens hips perfectly → creates the angle across his body, makes the GK think he is going into the far corner to make the GK move across as Tel is travelling with the ball.
* One touch across onto his right → sets the ball just far enough away from his feet to generate power without sacrificing accuracy
* Strike: instep, through the horizontal midline of the ball → keeps it low & true
* No backlift wasted — compact, efficient technique
* Result: Low, hard, inside the far post — keeper has zero reaction time
What separates good players from great ones is control under pressure — Tel didn't just run fast, he managed the situation the whole way. Body shape, timing of the cut, and the calmness to place it rather than blast it. Elite.

2v1 | Combine in Wide Areas
📌 Exploring 2v1s in wide areas
🔁 Set-Up:
➡️ Split the pitch into 3 equal zones of 10 by 12. Place an orange scoring zone at one end with 2 x mini goals placed on one side of the final zone (acting as crossing options).
➡️ Add a red scoring zone in the first third of the pitch for the defending team to escape into.
👕 Teams: ⚫️ Possession team, 🔴 Defending team
How to Play:
➡️ ⚫️s work the ball through the thirds. They must get the ball into the orange shaded zone, then try to cross into one of the mini goals.
➡️ 🔴 (1) must defend in the first zone and then recover to block the cross in the final zone. 🔴 (2) in the central zone must delay the attack so 🔴 (1) can get into a blocking position. If the 🔴’s win the ball, they attack the red shaded zone in a 2v2.
🚧 Constraints:
🏆Reward: A bonus ⚽️ for the defending team if the ⚫️s don’t score to incentivise the defending.
👨🏫 Review: The ⚫️s movements and timing of runs to create scoring chances.
🚫 Restriction: Place a 6-second time limit on the ⚫️s attack, which means the 🔴’s can go anywhere if the time runs out.

5v5 | Stepping In with the Ball | Directional Possession
📌 Stepping into the field with the ball.
🧰 Set-Up:
✔️ 30 by 20 pitch space with a 5-yard add-on zone at each end.
👕 Teams: ⚫️s vs 🔴s
⚙️How to Play:
➡️ Each team has a target player diagonally opposite each other, leaving 3 players inside the main playing area.
➡️ Both teams compete for possession and score by transferring the ball from target to target. When a player in the main playing area passes to their target, they exchange places with them.
🚧 Constraints:
🏆Reward: A player stepping in and wall passing around a player = double goals
👨🏫 Review: The players who are stepping into the practice - their ability to run with the ball and release it at the right time.
🚫 Restriction: Progression: Teams cannot pass back over to a target until they have found the opposite target.

At some point in your coaching career, you will doubt yourself.
Feeling that you are not as good as others, that everyone else knows more than you do. The one mistake you made was proof that you are an imposter.
This feeling is called imposter syndrome and occurs far more frequently in coaches than most people care to admit. It happens after a bad session, a loss, after watching another coach that oozes confidence and charisma.
Suddenly you are doubting everything, questioning if the things you say, the language that you use, the techniques that got you to where you are now are not good enough.
What you need to know is that coaches that care the most, have the most reason to experience imposter syndrome.
They are the type of coaches that over analyze everything.
They think about their sessions after they are done, wondering whether the players got the key messages or if they enjoyed it.
Coaches that do not feel this way are usually not growing, or at least not progressing as their peers.
The main problem with imposter syndrome is not the fact that you feel this way, but the actions that you take as a result.
Some coaches will try to control everything in their sessions and environment to reduce the chances of feeling like an imposter again. Others will try to copy others to gain confidence from being someone else for a moment.
Certain coaches are willing to go to any lengths just to achieve results that prove their worth as a coach. A few stop experimenting with new approaches and simply repeat the same routine, aware that it may not be sufficient yet finding it comfortable.
None of these reactions are beneficial to the players or the coach going through them.
Even the best coaches on the planet can still fall to these emotions. In all likelihood, they continue to wrestle with self-doubt on a regular basis, yet they have learned how to manage it and refuse to let it interfere with their sessions or their players.
They achieve this by measuring their own progress against principles instead of peers, keeping their attention on the people they support, and recognising that growth is never a straight line.
A coach is not defined by the answers, but by the questions.
If you are feeling like an imposter, be the coach that truly cares about the people that you are working with and not about what others might think of you.
You are not alone and in all likelihood, you are at the perfect place to begin to grow.
