I would like to thank the Germany-based Kinyarwanda Real Talk Channel for conducting an in-depth interview with me almost three years after my retirement from the BBC Great Lakes. I hope the interview will help Rwandans understand who I am.
It enabled me to respond to the government smear campaign led by Minister @DrDamascene , even though I retired from service nearly three years ago.
It enabled me to refute the lie circulated by the Government of Rwanda that I was responsible for the BBC’s use of the term “Rwanda genocide” rather than “genocide against the Tutsi,” the terminology promoted by the Rwandan government.
I returned to my earlier life as a freelancer for BBC Swahili, when my Tutsi appearance gave me away on trips amid heightened tensions between Hutus and Tutsis following the RPF/RPA invasion in October 1990.
I recounted how my journalism affected my 3 sisters; they were targeted during the genocide because they were related to a brother accused of collaborating with the RPF rebels. Two died in the wilderness. The militias in my village hung photographs of me on trees and pierced them with spears, cursing because they could not find me.
After serving 10 years in prison, one of them came to our home to apologise. When I asked him whether he could have killed me, he replied, “Yes”. When I asked why, he said they had been told I was collaborating with RPF rebels.
I recounted how, after a reconciliation meeting in Kigali in 2007, my manager advised me to acquire British nationality. He said that, based on the meeting he had attended, he had concluded the government did not want me there.
I also recounted surviving a 2009 INTORE plot to have me dismissed during the genocide’s 15th anniversary. It coincided with the Great Lakes service’s suspension in April after it rejected the government’s demand to suppress a programme featuring Hutus who opposed collective apologies for the genocide against the Tutsi as a path to reconciliation. The government called the programme Tutsi genocide denial.
I recounted how, in 2014, Rwandan authorities used the BBC Two documentary ‘Rwanda Untold Story’ as a pretext to suspend the Great Lakes service indefinitely, even though it had no role in producing the documentary. I said they did so because the service had become a thorn in their disinformation strategy.
I discussed my mental well-being. The persistent challenges of covering Rwanda ultimately affected my mental health, and I was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). On the advice of mental health professionals, I had to leave. I was unable to discuss my PTSD in detail because of restrictions in the statement of agreement I signed with the BBC, after my managers had distanced themselves from me.
However, page 1 of the Human Rights Watch report “Join Us or Die”: Rwanda’s Extraterritorial Repression accurately describes my circumstances at the time of my retirement.
When I met Clementine de Montjeye, a senior Great Lakes researcher at Human Rights Watch, on 22 August 2022, I was still taking medication for PTSD prescribed by a psychiatrist at Memorial Hospital and carefully following the psychologist’s advice at Erith Hospital. I didn’t realise that, as she listened, Clementine was also observing me:
“When a Rwandan journalist living in London, United Kingdom, sat down on a bench in a public park, in August 2022, the first thing he said, after nervous introductions, was: “My wife didn’t want me to come. We have to be careful.” His eyes darting around to check if anyone was eavesdropping, he explains how some of his relatives in Rwanda are under surveillance and have been marginalized because of his work. In London, he lives afraid and isolated, and has suffered from panic attacks and depression. He has a flak jacket and security cameras at home. “I’ve stopped attending any gatherings of Rwandans. I never invite Rwandans around to my house anymore. But now, I am attacked online, he said.”

No one denies the FDLR exists, nor its roots. "Existential threat?" Now that's funny. This superbly-equipped army is sent to tackle CAR and Mozambique's security issues. Why isn't it clustered exclusively along the border with DRC if Rwanda faces an "existential threat"?

🇷🇼 THE RWANDAN GOVERNMENT MUST EXPLAIN WHY JUSTICE AND HUMAN RIGHTS CONTINUE TO BE A CONCERN!
A statement by #RémyAmahirwa, the son of @VictoireUmuhoza , following three days in #Geneva, Switzerland, raises a critical question that deserves serious attention: Are human rights and political freedoms being adequately respected in Rwanda?
Rémy says he raised concerns before the United Nations regarding his mother’s imprisonment, freedom of expression, political participation, and the right to a fair trial.
Even more concerning, according to his statement, the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention had already found his mother’s detention to be arbitrary and in violation of international law, calling for her immediate release.
How can a country claim to uphold the rule of law while serious concerns about the detention of a political figure remain unresolved?
The Rwandan government must address these concerns transparently and demonstrate its commitment to justice, fundamental freedoms, and the protection of human rights.
Freedom of expression, political participation, and the right to a fair trial are not privileges granted by governments. They are fundamental rights that must be respected and protected.
🇷🇼 RELEASE VICTOIRE INGABIRE UMUHOZA!
Justice must prevail. Human rights must be respected. No one should be imprisoned unjustly for their political beliefs or peaceful expression.

TO: The Embassy of the United States of America in Rwanda( @USAmbRwanda ) .
SUBJECT: Request for an Urgent Review of Alleged Incitement to Murder Sergeant Major Robert Kabera by Mrs. Dusenge Clenia (Madedeli), Who Is Reportedly Applying for a U.S. Visa
Dear Representatives of the United States Embassy in Rwanda,
I am writing to bring to your attention serious concerns regarding a post published on the social media platform X by Mrs. Dusenge Clenia @MadederiOG , also known as Madedeli.
According to the evidence in my possession, this individual is alleged to have published statements calling for the killing of Sergeant Major Robert #Kabera. I respectfully request that these statements be thoroughly reviewed to establish whether they were indeed authored by her, to assess their meaning in their full context, and to determine whether they may have legal implications.
I have also received information indicating that Mrs. Dusenge Clenia may have a pending application for a visa to travel to the United States of America and is awaiting a decision from the relevant authorities.
Given the seriousness of these allegations, I respectfully request that your office consider the following:
1. Review of the Submitted Evidence
I request that the post published by Mrs. Clenia on her X account be examined, as it allegedly encouraged people to kill Robert Kabera and included a list of other individuals whom she allegedly wanted to see killed.
2. Assessment of Whether an Investigation Is Warranted
If a preliminary review reveals credible evidence of conduct that may violate applicable laws, I respectfully request that the information be referred to the appropriate authorities for further investigation in accordance with the law.
3. Review of the Visa Application
If Mrs. Dusenge Clenia has an application for a U.S. visa pending, I respectfully request that the information and supporting evidence provided be referred to the competent authorities to determine whether any provisions of U.S. immigration law may be relevant to this matter.
4. A Decision Based on the Law and Evidence
I respectfully request that, should the review establish legally valid grounds for granting or denying her visa, an appropriate decision be made in accordance with applicable laws and procedures. I am not asking for a decision to be made without a proper review; rather, I am requesting that the evidence submitted not be disregarded.
Furthermore, I am concerned that granting her a visa to travel to or reside in the United States could create potential security concerns, particularly given the possibility that Rwandan nationals who criticize the government in Kigali could be exposed to insecurity. The United States is one of the world’s most powerful countries, and I believe it is important to ensure that all relevant security concerns are carefully considered.
For these reasons, I respectfully request that the Embassy and the relevant U.S. authorities carefully assess this matter and consider denying her visa application, should the evidence and applicable law provide sufficient grounds for such a decision, rather than allowing her to travel to or reside in the United States.
Thank you for your time, attention, and consideration of this serious matter. I trust that the relevant authorities will review the information objectively, fairly, and in accordance with the laws of the United States.
Yours faithfully,
#TEAMINKINGI

8 YEARS SINCE BONIFACE TWAGIRIMANA DISAPPEARED: SILENCE IS NOT AN ANSWER—TRUTH AND JUSTICE ARE OBLIGATIONS!
Eight years have passed since Boniface Twagirimana, the former Vice President of the opposition party FDU-Inkingi, disappeared from Mpanga Prison in 2018. Yet, to this day, fundamental questions about what happened to him remain unanswered.
HOW CAN A PERSON IN STATE CUSTODY DISAPPEAR FROM PRISON, AND EIGHT YEARS PASS WITHOUT THE FULL TRUTH ABOUT THEIR FATE BEING ESTABLISHED?
When a person is imprisoned, the state has a responsibility to protect their life, ensure their safety, and respect their fundamental rights. When a detainee disappears, it is not enough to offer explanations that have not been independently verified. What is needed is a thorough, transparent, and credible investigation that delivers concrete answers.
The Rwandan government must not treat Boniface Twagirimana’s disappearance as a forgotten matter simply because time has passed. Time cannot replace the truth, and the passage of eight years does not diminish his family’s right to know what happened to their loved one.
QUESTIONS THE RWANDAN GOVERNMENT MUST ANSWER
•Where exactly did Boniface Twagirimana disappear, and what independent evidence supports the explanations given regarding his disappearance?
•What investigations have been conducted, and what records and evidence can be made public to establish the truth?
•What concrete steps have been taken to ensure that his family receives credible answers?
•Who will be held accountable if evidence establishes negligence or other unlawful conduct?
The Rwandan government must understand that legitimate governance is not built on power alone. It also depends on accountability, respect for the rule of law, and recognition of citizens’ right to demand answers from those entrusted with public responsibility.
If the government maintains that its actions complied with the law, it should support an independent and credible investigation capable of establishing the facts and uncovering the truth about what happened to Boniface Twagirimana. The truth should not be feared, and justice should not be reserved for some while denied to others.
Eight years later, his family still has the right to know what happened to him. The Rwandan people also have the right to know whether their institutions are fulfilling their duty to protect every person’s life and fundamental rights, regardless of their political beliefs or affiliations.
The Rwandan government must provide concrete answers. Silence, a lack of transparency, and the failure to present sufficient evidence cannot substitute for truth and justice.
THE TRUTH ABOUT BONIFACE TWAGIRIMANA MUST COME TO LIGHT.
HIS FAMILY HAS THE RIGHT TO KNOW.
JUSTICE MUST BE UPHELD .

Thirty-six years after the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) launched its offensive against Rwanda on 1 October 1990, the wounds of war remain open. The victims are still waiting for justice, the truth about crimes committed across Rwanda and the Great Lakes region remains contested, and the fundamental question of political freedom in Rwanda remains unresolved. On this solemn anniversary, FDU-Inkingi pays tribute to all those whose lives were shattered by the successive tragedies that have ravaged Rwanda and the wider Great Lakes region. It calls for an honest reckoning with the RPF’s record in power and for a future in which justice is impartial, human rights are protected, and every Rwandan can freely choose their leaders.
