Many years ago I spent 2 years working full-time for a homeless charity. Day shifts, night shifts, working with some of the most vulnerable people in society.
I can tell you categorically that rough sleeping is not a housing problem; it is an addiction and mental-illness problem.
Too often, rough sleepers are given accommodation without the necessary services behind them to address either their addiction, mental-illness, or both. It doesn't work.
You might get them off the street for Christmas, but then what? No doubt Burnham will give himself a pat on the back, crack open the Twiglets, and claim he's bringing hope and good cheer.
Then days, weeks, or months later, the vunerable subjects of his social experiment will be back where they started, often in a worse state than they were before due to the shame of another failed attempt to turn their life around.
Unless you have services able to provide rough sleepers with sustained intervention for the underlying cause of their homelessness you are simply setting them up to end back on the streets.
Genuinely solving rough sleeping takes strategy, long-term planning and on-going investment. Throwing half a billion at it in this haphazard way, without any clear plan or costing, is like buying a fancy new bucket and claiming you've fixed the leaking roof.
It's another example of this career politician with no real-life experience failing to understand, let alone fix, a real-life problem. It will fail for exactly the same reasons it failed in Manchester.

The ban won't work and will potentially expose children to greater, unregulated harms. Children are resourceful and will find ways around the ban. Some of those ways will lead them down dangerous paths across the internet. 5/6
Muddy with a few scrapes, loving every moment. Rugby is a fabulous sport for girls, building resilience, teamwork and fitness. It's been great for my daughter and I can't recommend it highly enough.

Hard to believe this was 4 years ago today. It's been quite a journey, after quite a journey...

The build-up to Christmas can be difficult and overwhelming - but our grief doesn't leave us just because Christmas is over.
No matter the size of the problem, please reach out for support if you are struggling 💙

Sam joined WAY after she was suddenly widowed in 2021, looking for support in a world where she knew very few people widowed pre-retirement age.

When we went to see the 1217 copy of Magna Carta at @HFDCathedral last month, my son was fascinated by its meaning & relevance today. Like this part:
"No freeman is to be taken or imprisoned...save by lawful judgement of his peers".
Imagine giving up our right to trial by jury.

It’s time for a new approach to supporting bereaved students. No more one-size-fits-all bereavement policy. Ask them one simple question: What do you need and how can we support you?

This is why #rugby is such a great sport. Red Roses World Cup winner @LarkDavies out tonight in freezing conditions inspiring my daughter and her teammates at our local club. Fabulous experience. #inspirational #rolemodel #WomensWorldCup2025
Great night at @WorcsWarriors last night watching my son form the 'Guard of Honour' for the Act of Remembrance with @hwacf, followed by a cracking game of rugby. Warriors winning with a last minute try capped off a memorable night ❤️ #Warriors #Remembrance #Rugby #prouddad

As a life-long @AVFCOfficial supporter, I'm appalled by the decision not to allow Maccabi Tel Aviv fans to attend the game. A shameful day for our country, and I desperately hope the decision can be changed. Football should be about unity.
I was released from Hamas captivity in January and I am a die hard fan of Maccabi Tel Aviv.
I am shocked to my core with this outrageous decision to ban me, my family and my friends from attending an Aston Villa game in the UK.
Football is a way of bringing people together irrespective of their faith, colour or religion and this disgusting decision does the exact opposite. Shame on you.
I hope you come to your senses and reconsider.
I do wonder what exactly has become of British society, this is like putting a big sign on the outside of a stadium saying “No Jews allowed”
What has become of the UK where blatant antisemitism has become the norm?
What a sad world we are living in.
My daughter was 5 when her mum died. She's 11 now, and today would've been her mum's 43rd birthday. To mark the occasion, she's decided to take a cake into school to share with her friends and talk about her mum. She's made her #grief her own, and I couldn't be more proud of her.
First match for my daughter's rugby team since the #WomensWorldCup2025 . It has to be one of the most inclusive sports going. No matter what size, shape, or natural sporting ability, there's a place for all. It epitomizes unity because it includes everyone. #Rugby
