Areta is pleased to have advised Saber Money (@Sabermoney), a stablecoin payment infrastructure company for emerging markets, on securing strategic investment from Tether (@tether) and CMCC Global’s Titan Fund (@CMCC_Global) to scale stablecoin-powered payments.
Last week in Singapore, our Head of APAC, Joseph Goh (@josephgjh), joined Adam Bilmes of S&P Dow Jones Indices (@SPDJIndices) and Elizabeth Yenko (@hey_elizabethy) of New York Life Investment Management (@NYLIManagement) on stage at The Capital Summit x Asia Stablecoin Conference to discuss what makes an onchain investment product institutionally investable.
The view from the stage:
The institutional focus in digital assets has shifted from proof of concept to market entry, with distribution central to the next phase of tokenisation.
Fast and cheap payments are now standard, so speed alone no longer makes the case for stablecoins.
So where do stablecoin payments still win? The data points to card spend funded onchain, sub-cent payments no bank can process economically, and cross-border corridors where correspondent banking still takes days.
Key takeaways from our latest Areta Insights newsletter, the Stablecoin Payments Snapshot:
Welcome to the Team, Sofiya! 🚀
Sofiya joins @areta_io as a Marketing Lead, bringing substantial expertise in go-to-market strategy, growth marketing, communications and strategic partnerships across Web3 and traditional finance.
She began her career in financial services at Deutsche Börse and Bank Gutmann, before transitioning to the digital asset industry. Most recently, she was an early member of the team contributing to Soneium, the Ethereum Layer 2 by Sony Block Solutions Labs. During her time there, she provided extensive marketing support through its testnet and mainnet launches, and contributed to the network's subsequent growth. Before that, she held marketing and growth roles at Astar Network and 727 ventures. She has also been advising early-stage Web3 start-ups on growth and marketing strategies.
Please join us in welcoming Sofiya to Areta as she begins this next chapter with the team.
At first glance, looks like another partnership between a bank and a crypto company, but the mechanics are more interesting than that. Citi is effectively providing the regulated banking layer, while Coinbase provides the stablecoin and onchain infrastructure. Businesses can interact with both without having to build and operate two separate financial systems themselves.
On one side, Coinbase is using Citi’s banking infrastructure to give businesses something that behaves much more like a traditional bank account, while stablecoins sit underneath the hood.
The goal? Making the fiat <> stablecoin experience largely invisible to the end user.
We’ve been seeing the payments conversation being built for years. What feels different now is the pace of integration between traditional financial infrastructure and digital asset infrastructure 🚀
We're bringing stablecoins into the banking system with @Citi.
That means instant stablecoin acceptance for institutions - all on bank-grade, regulated infrastructure.
The next step for stablecoins becoming everyday money.

Back from Barcelona after a great few days at @EBlockchainCon 🇪🇸
Notably, almost every European bank and asset manager was present and is now actively exploring, building, or even acquiring across stablecoins, tokenization, and onchain financial markets infrastructure.
I joined leaders from @WhiteCase, @generaltensor, and @Stifel for a panel discussion to discuss IPOs and M&A activity in the European digital assets market.
Clear consensus that while IPO activity in Europe is lagging significantly behind the US (not only in crypto), the M&A market remains incredibly active, with payments, tokenization, and trading infrastructure among the most active verticals.
What has changed since prior years is that major financial institutions have doubled down on the industry through M&A or significant strategic investments, including most recently:
- @SPGlobal: acquisition of @OpenZeppelin & investment in @KaikoData
- @Mastercard: acquisition of @BVNKFinance
- @Nasdaq: investment in @krakenfx
Welcome to the Team, Liyan! 🚀
Liyan joins @areta_io as an Off-Cycle Analyst, bringing experience across investment banking, financial analysis, and strategic advisory. She will support the team across M&A, corporate finance, and strategic projects as we continue to grow our institutional business.
Prior to joining Areta, Liyan gained investment banking experience at @HSBC, where she worked within the Consumer, Healthcare and Retail sector team across M&A and strategic advisory projects. She has also developed experience in business analysis and corporate finance, with a particular interest in M&A, financial technology, and emerging digital asset markets.
Please join us in welcoming Liyan to Areta as she begins this next chapter with the team.
Areta is at @thestablecon 2026 in Washington DC 🇺🇸
Our Director, @96siddharthshah will be at Stablecon from September 9–11, speaking on the consolidation of Tokenized Finance.
The session will look at how tokenized assets are moving from pilots into core capital markets infrastructure, and where financial institutions will build, buy, or partner across issuance, custody, trading, settlement, data, and distribution.
📍 The Stable Pulse Stage
📅 September 9–11

As we noted in the @areta_io Payments Snapshot, stablecoins are moving from being mainly a crypto trading tool to becoming part of the broader payments stack.
$CRCL reported $701M in Q2 revenue and reserve income, with USDC circulation reaching $73.3B, up 19% YoY. On-chain transaction volume was even stronger, reaching $14.8T, up 151% YoY.
The market is starting to reflect this growth too, with CRCL up ~30% over the past month, while regulatory clarity around stablecoins continues to improve. Circle also received its OCC national trust bank charter, further strengthening its position as regulated payments infrastructure.
Are tokens dead?
Well, earlier this week, the SEC proposed “Regulation Crypto Assets,” outlining a more defined framework for certain token-based fundraising in the US.
This could give projects a clearer path to raise from the public to fund development, unlike before, with proposed exemptions of up to $5m and, under a larger framework with more requirements, up to $75m over 12 months.
In simple terms: raise to build → build what you said you would → potentially move beyond the investment-contract framework.
Don't get me wrong - it doesn’t mean every startup should issue a token again. In many cases, equity is still the more suitable instrument.
It's actually a very positive development that we left the times of "let's just launch a token" behind us. Today, teams really have to think twice about going down the token route!
On the regulatory side, it’s encouraging to see this come out: the question is no longer simply whether the offering of a token should be allowed, but how the rules should work when a token is actually part of building and operating a network.
We’ve been talking about payment rails for a long time, and in this week's Stablecoin Payments newsletter, we cover what this shift means for banks, financial institutions, and businesses.
As @chrismaurice put it: banks are emerging as the next distribution channel. The opportunity isn’t just about modernising payments, but about connecting banks to stablecoin rails and using that infrastructure to extend dollar access to businesses that traditional correspondent banking has left behind.
On that note - many congrats again on the recent $40m raise, Chris and the @yellowcard_app team!
We're excited to share that @TheTieIO has acquired @StakingRewards, the industry's benchmark data platform for staking and digital asset yield, from Finrate AG.
Areta acted as the exclusive strategic and financial advisor to Finrate AG.
We had the opportunity to work closely with Mirko and the Finrate team throughout the process, supporting one of the most significant data transactions in the digital asset yield space.
Founded in 2018, Staking Rewards has grown into the category-defining platform for staking and yield data, serving over one million annual users and leading exchanges, custodians, validators, asset managers, and protocols.
With Staking Rewards' datasets integrated into The Tie Terminal and APIs, institutional users will be able to analyze yield intelligence alongside market data, on-chain analytics, and news.
We were pleased to support Finrate AG on this transaction and wish both teams the very best for the journey ahead!
What a headline - @citsecurities invested $400 million in @cryptocom , marking the exchange's first institutional fundraising round in more than a decade.
For a firm like Citadel Securities, an equity investment is rarely just about financial exposure. It is tied to a broader commercial or strategic objective. Crypto.com has one of the largest retail franchises in crypto, while Citadel specializes in providing liquidity. When you pair that distribution with trading, payments, cards, and prediction markets operating on its own CFTC-regulated derivatives exchange, the strategic rationale becomes pretty clear.
Citadel has been building relationships across exchanges, payments, stablecoins, and tokenization infrastructure rather than making isolated bets. They are positioning across the key layers of the future market structure. It's exciting for the entire space to monitor this!
One of the central themes in our latest Payments Insights newsletter is that stablecoins alone won't define the future of cross-border payments.
Instead, the frontrunners will be those combining stablecoin settlement with regulated local infrastructure, compliance, custody, liquidity, and distribution.
Some of our key takeaways:
- Stablecoins are being integrated into the existing payments stack, not replacing it.
- Regulated distribution is becoming the key competitive advantage, with banks, PSPs, and licensed financial institutions leading adoption.
- OpenUSD highlights the industry's shift from competing on issuance to competing on distribution and settlement.
- The build vs. buy vs. partner decisions are being made now and the window of opportunity to build alliances is short.
As @bebrites from @tracefinance shared, it's a timely observation that reinforces a broader trend: winning in cross-border payments is becoming less about the asset itself and more about the infrastructure around it.

Throwback to our co-founder @KarlAhrend sharing insights on the evolving role of stablecoins at @thestablecon
When asked about the positive impact of stablecoin adoption, Karl pointed to one of the most significant opportunities often overlooked in developed markets: access to the US dollar.
The discussion reflects a broader trend across digital finance. As stablecoins become increasingly embedded in payments, remittances, treasury operations, and cross-border settlement, they are evolving from a crypto-native tool into a public one.

We brought the @areta_io crew together in one place for our offsite ⚡️
We’re usually across time zones, so being in one place for a change just felt right. Conversations went beyond work, and the work felt more intentional because of it.
A big part of the week was stepping back and pressure-testing what’s ahead, mandates we’re excited about and where the digital assets space is moving!
Back from ETHCC Cannes 🇫🇷
This felt very different from last year, here are the key takeaways from @EthCC 2026
- We noticed noticeably sharper conversations. Lesser noise and hype trends, with more focus on substantive discussions than in previous bull market periods.
- Clear shift toward institutional and enterprise-grade use cases
- Despite lower onchain activity, major TradFi players are actively watching and positioning, with M&A emerging as a key entry point
Grateful to all the founders, clients, and old friends who joined us at our dinner co-hosted with @SeliniCapital
