I am thinking of Sir David Amess today, 5 years from his murder. David was a true gentleman. He truly was an honourable man. I miss seeing him around the House of Commons and think of him regularly. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cx5yā¦
Very important debate, Nick. And incredibly well chaired.
I was pleased to secure a debate on the wildfires that did so much damage in Torfaen.
I paid tribute to all who worked tirelessly to combat the wildfires & our local communities who came together to support them.
Thanks to @AnnaMcMorrin who visited Torfaen to hear from people.

Be under no illusion: this is a significant victory for everyone who stuck their neck out and defended jury trials, day after day, clause by clause.
But it is not a comprehensive victory.
Magistrates should not be allowed to send people to prison for two years.

It is worth listening to @KarlTurnerMP as part of the @HouseofCommons discussion of the Courts and Tribunal Bill, at Report Stage and Third Reading on Tuesday 13 October 2026.
Yesterday in the House of Commons, I spoke at Report Stage and Third Reading of the Courts and Tribunals Bill.
We must tackle court delays, but not at the expense of justice, defendantsā rights or public confidence in our legal system. Reform must address the causes of delay, not weaken essential safeguards.

Great to interview Karl Turner MP about his father Ken Turner's remarkable NUS/RMT legacy & our research into the 2022 P&O Ferries sackings.
Thanks to @KarlTurnerMP & Louis Graves for a superb Westminster visit!

This Baby Loss Awareness Week, Iām standing with every family affected by the heartbreak of losing a baby. šš
Every baby matters, every loss matters, and no one should have to grieve alone. We must continue to raise awareness, break the silence and ensure every bereaved family receives the compassion and support they deserve.
#BLAW #BabyLossAwarenessWeek
Today is world mental health awareness day. Mental health matters, and itās something we should all feel able to talk about. It is important that people feel supported, listened to and able to ask for help when theyāre struggling. None of us should ever feel that we have to face difficult times alone. Mental ill health isnāt different to physical l health it can happen to anybody at anytime.
If youāre not feeling yourself, if life feels overwhelming, or if youāre finding things difficult, please talk to someone. It could be a friend, a family member, a colleague or someone you trust. Reaching out is not a sign of weakness; itās an important first step towards getting the support you need.
And if you feel thereās nobody you can turn to, please remember that the Samaritans are there to listen, without judgement, day or night. You can call them free on 116 123.
Look after yourself, look out for one another, and remember that YOU MATTER, your feelings matter, and support is available for you.

Thanks for your support throughout @SadiqKhan, it meant the world to me. Especially given that we worked together when you were my boss as shadow Justice Sec/Lord Chancellor and I was your shadow Minister (access to justice/legal aid).
We should be incredibly proud that trial by oneās peers is seen as a cornerstone of a civilised democracy, dating back 800 years in England.
We all want to see swifter justice and backlogs cleared up but it should never have been at the expense of reducing jury trials and risking injustices.
I welcome this announcement today.

I welcome the decision to scrap plans for Crown Court Bench Division (CCBD).
Iām pleased that Prime Minister Andy Burnham has honoured his commitment to drop these unworkable proposals.
This is an important step forward, but we must continue to defend access to justice and the fundamental right to a fair trial.
Today is World Suicide Prevention Day.
10 years ago my nephew, Matty took his own life. Matty had recently qualified as a lawyer and had been called to the Bar. He had everything to live for. Suicide can affect anyone. Making sure people can access the right support when they need it, and creating spaces where people feel able to talk about their mental health, can save lives.

Such a waste of a life. RIP, Brother š
The wife of PC Matthew Blades, one of our officers who was sadly killed in the collision on the A66 in the early hours of Saturday 22 August 2026, has paid the following tribute to him:
"No words will ever feel like the right words to honour our Matt ā my beloved husband, my best friend, and the most devoted father to our two young boys.
"He was an adored son and brother, a perfect son-in-law, and the most fun uncle. He was loved beyond words by all his family and friends, and his loss has left a space that can never be filled.
"He gave his life in the line of duty, protecting and serving others with courage, dedication and selflessness.
"The pain of losing him is beyond words, and our lives will never be the same. Neither will the love he gave us ever fade.
"Our children will grow up knowing what an incredible father he was and will always be, and I will carry his love, his memory and everything we shared with me always.
"He may have left this world committed to the duty he believed in, but his greatest legacy will always be the love he gave to his family.
"We would also like to express our deepest gratitude and heartfelt thanks to all of the emergency services and to our police family who have stood beside us through the most difficult time of our lives.
"The kindness, compassion, love and unwavering support we have received as a family has meant more to us than words could ever express. Every message, visit, gesture of support and every person who has stood alongside us will never be forgotten.
Forever loved. Forever missed. Forever our superhero. Our Matt and Dadā¤ļø"
Cleveland Police.
Idiotic policy. No wonder even Green voters know they arenāt voting for a party of government. Why on earth would we expose our police officers to further risk of physical injury? And what do the Greens think that alleged criminals shouldnāt be pepper sprayed or tasered if need be. I mean they arenāt shooting to kill. They are using these weapons to police violent offenders. If a police officer gives a reasonable instruction and itās ignored then those ignoring deserve to be apprehended with reasonable force in the circumstances. End of.
