๐จUPDATE: INDY & WILLOW HAVE BEEN FOUND! โค๏ธ๐๐จ
Dianne and I are thrilled that Indy and Willow have been located and are now safely in the care of Mareworthy!
When we learned about their situation, we offered a $10,000 reward to help bring these two mares to safety. Today, weโre grateful that the effort helped achieve what mattered most, getting these horses somewhere they will be protected and cared for. At the persons request who provided the information for the safe return of Indy and Willow the reward has been paid to @kentuckyhorse .
We want to sincerely thank @Mareworthy , the Boyd County Sheriffโs Office in Kentucky, and everyone who helped bring these mares to safety.
But there is a much bigger issue here.
Why should a nonprofit horse rescue have to spend its limited resources on attorneys just to reach the point where offering a reward becomes necessary?
Those are dollars that should be going toward feeding, caring for, and protecting horses, not legal fees.
Situations like this demonstrate why we need stronger, consistent, and enforceable laws protecting all horses, including meaningful accountability when their welfare is at risk.
We talk constantly about aftercare in Thoroughbred racing. But aftercare doesnโt end when a horse leaves the racetrack or breeding shed.
OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO THESE ANIMALS LASTS THEIR ENTIRE LIVES.
Dianne and I are proud to have played a part in bringing Indy and Willow to safety, but the real credit belongs to the people who refused to give up on them.
Every horse deserves a safe home. Every horse deserves protection. And every horse deserves someone willing to fight for them.
WE ASK, PLEASE SUPPORT @Mareworthy AND THE IMPORTANT WORK THEY DO.

Now that Indy and Willow are safely back with Mareworthy, we want to share more about their return and express our gratitude to the incredible people who helped make it possible.
First, an extraordinary thank-you to @westlakeracing for generously offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the mares' safe recovery.
๐ ๐๐ก๐ ๐ช๐ ๐๐๐ฉ๐ ๐ฆ๐ข๐ ๐ ๐๐ก๐๐ฅ๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ก๐๐ช๐ฆ!
The individual whose information helped us locate Indy and Willow didn't want the reward for themselves. Instead, they requested that the entire $10,000 be donated to the @kentuckyhorse to support its efforts coordinating care for the additional horses from Marlo Matheny's property who are currently at the Boyd County Fairgrounds.
Westlake Racing Stable honored that request, and the donation has been made! ๐
We cannot adequately express our gratitude to the individual who helped us locate the mares, to Westlake Racing Stable, and to the people who kept Indy and Willow safe and cared for during the week before their return.
โ๏ธ We also want to give a very special thank-you to ๐ข๐น๐ถ๐๐ถ๐ฎ ๐๐ถ๐น๐ธ๐ถ๐๐ผ๐ป ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐บ ๐ฎ๐ ๐ฉ๐ฎ๐ป๐๐ป๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฝ ๐๐๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ป๐ฒ๐๐ ๐๐๐ฃ for helping Mareworthy navigate an incredibly complicated legal situation and ensure that the mares' return was handled through the appropriate legal channels.
We're equally grateful to the law enforcement officers, investigators, media outlets, and thousands of people across the country who shared photographs, provided information, and helped keep these two mares visible.
๐ฉ๐๐ฆ๐๐๐๐๐๐ง๐ฌ ๐๐ฆ ๐ฃ๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐๐๐ง๐๐ข๐ก.
Because Mareworthy continued sharing Indy and Willow's stories long after their adoptions, people knew their connection to our organization and knew whom to contact when concerns arose. That visibility gave us the opportunity to begin taking steps to protect them before this situation became public.
There are aspects of their recovery we cannot discuss publicly, but we're sharing more of their story in this video, including why following the legal process was so important.

While we're incredibly relieved to have Indy and Willow back, the financial impact of this effort is significant. Mareworthy has incurred substantial legal expenses, travel costs, and other recovery-related expenses over the past week. We're also preparing for veterinary examinations, diagnostics, and ongoing care to evaluate and address both mares' health and nutritional needs.
As a volunteer-run nonprofit, these are substantial expenses for our organization, and we would be incredibly grateful for any support you can provide as we continue caring for Indy, Willow, and the other Thoroughbred mares who depend on Mareworthy.

A gentle touch and a reassuring hand is all a horse needs to know that he is supported and not alone.
There's a special circle of hell for people who keep running (and dropping) horses with poor form, known issues, and for whom offers for a safe retirement have been made *multiple* times. We only have as much credibility as an industry as the worst among us.

The Thoroughbred industry needs to provide the funds and infrastructure to provide a safe retirement for broodmares when their breeding careers are over. Countless thoroughbred mares are ending up at cheap auctions and then feedlots/kill pen. Our organization has rescued many of them. Sadly one thoroughbred mare died this past week at a feedlot. It is a disgrace and cruel what is happening to these mares. Stop wanting to increase the foal crop until you take care of the first problem. The long term welfare and safety of the mares that give life to the industry must be the priority first and not creating more horses that may meet the same fate.

The TB industry can trace bloodlines back generations yet cannot account for where a living horse ends up
These mares had identities, breeding histories & people who profited from them
Where did their ownership trail end?
The needs verified lifetime traceability & accountability
โบ๏ธโค๐ Update! Brilliant Missy (Tattoo R13637),
N P Burns (Tattoo Q17635) and Partyinslowmotion (O05505) have been picked up from the TX lot about an hour ago. Look at them, how innocent they are. All served the Thoroughbred industry and none of them deserved to end up at a feedlot. Bizzar Brown should have been on this trailer too but she sadly died at the feedlot ๐ N P Burns has taken her place so in BB's honor at least we could save another mare's life.
Missy and Burns will be going to STES for quarantine and then Missy will go to Happened By Chance and Burns will remain at STES. Partyinmotion was placed by a private party and we have helped to arrange her transport to Hunt, TX.
๐ฅFolks, things have got to change for these Thoroughbred mares that served the industry. They deserve to be safe after their breeding careers have ended. Stand up for them.
Contact the Jockey Club, Breeders Cup and whoever else you know in the industry to demand protection for them. They want to promote breeding, then take care of the very creature that is giving life to the industry. No more delay, no more excuses. Enough is Enough.
And remember Bizzar Brown, Keepthename, Be Respectful and many more innocent Thoroughbred mares that lost their lives because they were thrust in to the auction/slaughter pipeline.
