At Algoma Steel in April 2025, a reporter asked Carney if his industrial carbon plan would add costs for a mill already hit by tariffs.
His answer: "It will actually reduce their costs in the end."
He also promised a carbon border tariff to protect Canadian steel.
By November 2025, Ottawa said it had no immediate plans for one.
Algoma has since laid off about 1,000 workers as tariffs hit and it switched to electric furnaces.
Now Canadian steel faces the EU's carbon tariff instead. 🤦🏻♂️

Pas un seul tarif réduit. Neuf pays européens n’ont toujours pas ratifié l’accord commercial. Nos exportations de bœuf et de porc restent interdites. Et l’Europe menace maintenant d’imposer un tarif carbone sur l’acier, l’aluminium, le béton et d'autres produits canadiens.
Pire encore, il veut rapprocher le Canada des politiques européennes complètement folles en matière de taxes, de dette, d’immigration et d’énergie.
Est-ce que ça réduit le coût de votre hypothèque, de votre loyer, de votre épicerie ou de votre essence?
Bien sûr que non.
Il est temps de revenir à la réalité. Nous avons des bouches à nourrir, des factures à payer, la criminalité à combattre, des frontières à sécuriser et de l’argent à économiser.
