.@Kim_Barker, @MarichkaVareni1 and Oleksandra Mykolyshyn on what it is like to live one day in Kyiv, as life in the Ukrainian capital gets harder and harder:
"Russia has threatened to knock out power, heat and water in Kyiv this winter. This month Moscow started trying to cut the city in two by hitting bridges over the Dnipro River, which divides the east, where rents are lower, from the west, where most people work.
Every decision, small or big, feels fraught with what-ifs that could be life-changing. People in Kyiv first decide where to sleep. A tent in a subway station. A car in an underground parking garage. A mattress in the hallway. A gamble in bed.
Shopping has turned into a Sisyphean task, because many larger stores make people leave when the sirens start. School is constantly interrupted, because children must go to the schools’ shelters for every alert."

Our latest story has been a while in the making: We followed Ukrainian medic Liliia Prutian as she came back from being held as a Russian POW and then rescued her son from the occupied territories. W/@Oks_Parafeniuk @dzvinka_pinchuk nytimes.com/2026/08/18/world… via @NYTimes
11/Anyone who thinks being a foreign correspondent is a glamorous job, here is your glamour. 🫤 please ping if nearby and have zloty. I will now only travel with zloty.
10/I realize that you are not the Polish border guards @BorderPolish. The Polish border guards are most definitely not on Twitter, or on X. They are too busy holding cars that have a full tank of gas and collecting zloty. Going on 6 hours now.
9/Here is my story about a man waiting for his great grandmother to be pulled out. nytimes.com/2025/11/22/world…
8/Meanwhile, I was in the rain and cold for five hours yesterday in the wet and cold to help bring you this story about Ternopil. And yeah, I know. I look like I’ve been through it. And that was before today. The video: nytimes.com/video/world/euro…
7/Truly—I have been at a lot of border crossings. But never have I ever met border guards like the Poles. I feel like I should be in Prague because it’s getting pretty Kafka here.
6/I will point out that the toilets at most of the toilets along the border are pay toilets. That take only zloty. No, there are no cash machines.
5/Jk. But if I disappear, I’m with the Polish border guards. And I’m more than aware that this is the kind of thing that happens to Ukrainians all the time. For a tank of petrol.
4/I have missed not just one flight, but two flights. Have no idea if and when they’ll let us through. Send help!
3/They want us to pay 158 Polish zloty. But only zloty. They will not take Euros or dollars or (obviously) Ukrainian hryvnias. No credit cards. We have not enough zloty. So we are now begging anyone near to try to get 8 zloty. That is about 2 bucks.
2/They tried to make me walk. In the snow. We tried begging other drivers for a lift to Krakow. They finally agreed to let us pay a fine of 158 zloty.
1/I am at the Ukrainian Polish border and have been held for five hours because the Ukrainian driver had a full take of petrol. This is what the Polish border guards are worried about. This. Petrol.
My latest take on the corruption scandal roiling Ukraine. nytimes.com/2025/11/20/world…
I loved going to this children’s camp in Ukraine, hanging out with the Turbo Kids and meeting Artem as he looked for friends. nytimes.com/2025/10/30/world…

.@HeathrowAirport hi. We just landed from Warsaw and there are no buses to get us off the plane. It’s been almost 50 minutes. Could you send buses? Or let us walk? Or give us an ETA of buses?

Thank you. I have been working some long hours, and the only thing that keeps me going is @nyttypos
