To recap Sheriff Judd’s comments today, the 10th Judicial Circuit Officer Involved Deadly Incident Task Force is investigating a deputy-involved shooting that occurred in the parking lot of Save a Lot, 2021 George Jenkins Blvd, in the city of Lakeland.
The suspect is 46-year-old Larry Renaldo Riles of Bartow. No deputies were injured and Riles was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
The sheriff misspoke earlier when he said 39 years in jail. Riles’ criminal history includes three previous felony charges. He was arrested for aggravated battery with a deadly weapon in 2007 by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. On October 27, 2025, he was arrested for grand theft by the PCSO, and on March 20,2026, he was arrested for violation of probation after failing a probation mandated drug test. He was released on April 14, 2026. He was currently on probation and had a current warrant for his arrest for violation of probation.

Big tunneling milestone!
For the first time, TBC has continuously mined in a Zero-People-in-Tunnel (ZPIT) configuration. There is nobody in the machine (besides the videographer), which is simultaneously advancing forward and erecting a ring (i.e. building the tunnel). Each full ring weighs ~24,000 pounds.
In the same way that full and rapid reusability is the holy grail for rockets, ZPIT continuous mining is the holy grail for Boring Machines. This is the safest, fastest, and least expensive architecture to build tunnels.
If you listen to Tim Pool regarding self defense you may end up in prison.
Austin Metcalf very well may have conducted a battery. A simple battery. Karmelo Anthony would have had a right to push him back… probably punching Metcalf in the face even though an escalation would have been a reasonable response to the battery.
Pulling a knife out and stabbing someone in the chest is deadly force. Deadly force in a very public setting in response to a force that doesn’t even create physical injury is not reasonable.
Do not do it. You will spend most of your life in jail like Karmelo Anthony will unless there is evidence on the videos that contradicts all of the witness statements we have seen so far.
