My Reaction to the COP29 Outcome “At COP29, developed nations once again coerced developing countries into accepting a financial deal woefully inadequate to address the gravity of our global climate crisis. The deal fails to provide the critical support required for developing countries to transition swiftly from fossil fuels to clean, renewable energy systems, or to prepare for the devastating impacts of the climate crisis, leaving them severely under-resourced. “The outcome offers false hope to those already bearing the brunt of climate disasters and abandons vulnerable communities and nations, leaving them to face these immense challenges alone. We must persist in our fight, demanding a significant increase in financing and holding developed countries to account for delivering real, impactful actions.” #COP29 #PayUp #ClimateFinance #ClimateFinanceNow #FossilFuels #JustTransition #ClimateJusticeNow

This was meant to be the finance COP, but the Global North turned up with a plan to betray the Global South. In the end, we saw the same story play out, with developing countries being left little choice but to accept a bad deal. As civil society we called on developing countries to reject a bad deal, a deal that would betray the people in the Global South. We are not defeated; we will fight back home, we will be out in numbers and louder than ever. The fight is far from over.”

Not only was this a hugely weak COP29 deal, it was pushed through over the objections of a number of countries. Azerbaijan’s authoritarian regime may be used bulldozing opposition against its own people, but the UN process cannot be bullied in the same way. This is yet more proof that this has been the worst led meeting in COP history.

Huddling 30 hours after the scheduled closing is not a good sign. Also, it is not equitable because for one many developing countries delegations have flown home by now. And to think they all had 3 years to work on this new finance goal. #NegotiationsByExhaustion

6/6. The two groups have indicated that they can not accept the new text and have not been properly included in the negotiation process at #COP29 and therefore have temporarily walked out but want to continue to push for a fair deal.

5/6. Other key demands included a clear definition of what is ✅ an is not 🚫 #ClimateFinance and failing that a negative saying what should not be counted. E.g. export credits, market rate loans and finance for fossil fuel expansion.
