If you closely watch videos of confirmed deception, especially with high stakes involved, you can learn a lot about what lying usually looks like.
"Did you murder your wife?" That's the first question Diane Sawyer asks Scott Peterson, and he doesn't even blink. He just looks at her and says no, as calmly as if she'd asked about the weather. And then he added something strange: "Murder is a possibility that creeps into my mind late at night and early in the morning." It's January 2003, and his pregnant wife Laci has been missing for a month. She disappeared from their home in Modesto, California on Christmas Eve. She was eight and a half months pregnant with a boy they had already named Conner. Scott told police he'd gone fishing that morning, alone, and that when he came home she was gone. The whole country searched for her. Her face was on every channel. Then a massage therapist named Amber Frey went to the police and said she had been dating Scott for weeks. He had told her he wasn't married. In the video below, Scott sits across from Sawyer on national television while his wife is still missing, and he tries to explain all of it. He says he had nothing to do with her disappearance. He says violence against women is the most disgusting thing he can imagine. Then Sawyer asks about the affair. He says he told Laci about it before she disappeared, and that it didn't cause a big problem between them. Sawyer asks if he really expects people to believe a woman eight and a half months pregnant just made peace with it. "No one knows our relationship but us," he says. He also says he told the police about Amber right away. After the interview, he called the network back to correct himself. He never told them. Sawyer keeps going. A neighbor says Laci opened the curtains every single morning, and that morning they stayed shut. The kitchen floor had just been mopped. Why go fishing alone on Christmas Eve, with your wife about to give birth? Then Sawyer points out something nobody else had noticed. In the whole interview, he hasn't once mentioned his son. Watch his face when she asks about the baby. At the very end she asks if he's afraid the police will arrest him. He says there's no basis. Three months later, the bodies of Laci and Conner washed up on the shore of San Francisco Bay, close to where Scott said he had been fishing. Days after that, police arrested him near San Diego. His hair was dyed blond and he had $15,000 in cash. At his trial, prosecutors played this interview for the jury. It was entered as evidence. He was sentenced to death. In 2021 the sentence was changed to life without parole. He still says he's innocent, and in 2024 an innocence project took up his case. Watch the full interview and tell me. Is this a grieving husband, or a man who already knows where his wife is?

We talk a lot about how Vivek’s ad doomed his campaign. But politics aside, his campaign retraumatized a whole family. That is going to be his mark on politics. And JD Vance defended it
Amy Acton's stepfather's surviving biological daughter spoke to The Daily Mail when they knocked on her door in Ohio, while sobbing. She said: She believed Amy's story, because her father raped her sister more than once (the victim in this 1974 indictment); she remembered Amy lived in a tent with Donna and Cledith; it's been terrible for her family to see Vivek's ad run in Ohio; and she heard rumors her father had victimized even more young girls.

@AARP I see your commercials saying how you fight so hard to protect Social Security, but you've never ONCE told your members never to vote for Republicans who ALL want to eliminate Social Security. Your actions need to match your words if you want any credibility.

Abdul El-Sayed on the Iran war: “In one fell swoop, he puts both of the key ingredients to the industry that’s holding up the entire stock market in America at risk. Q: Are you the one who’s going to turn Texas blue? @JamesTalarico: I’m not interested in turning Texas blue. I wanna win this seat so that I can fight for all 31 million Texans — whether they’re Democrats, independents, or Republicans. My party talks about turning Texas blue a lot. Republicans talk about keeping Texas red. I think the best color for Texas is purple. When you have a purple state and competitive elections, it forces every politician in both parties to stay on their toes. My hope in this race is that we can end 30 years of one-party rule and get competitive elections back in Texas so politicians are actually solving problems.

“Perversion, the erotic form of hatred, is a fantasy, usually acted out but occasionally restricted to a daydream… It is a habitual, preferred aberration necessary for one’s full satisfaction, primarily motivated by hostility. By ‘hostility’ I mean a state in which one wishes to harm an object… The hostility in perversion takes form in a fantasy of revenge hidden in the actions that make up the perversion and serves to convert childhood trauma to adult triumph. To create the greatest excitement, the perversion must also portray itself as an act of risk-taking. … I have recently found myself believing that perversion arises as a way of coping with threats to one’s gender identity, that is, one’s sense of masculinity and femininity… Now and in coming years the task is to see if the hypothesis that perversions are usually disorders of masculinity and femininity is generally true…” - Robert J. Stoller — perversion as eroticized hatred from Perversion: The Erotic Form of Hatred (1975)

Life under an abuser’s control often leads to the erosion of your identity. Your voice quietens, your dreams fade, and your sense of self begins to vanish. You question your thoughts, memories, and even your right to exist. One survivor shared, “It’s so subtle we don’t see it happening until one day we realize everything that made us who we are is gone. And it takes so long to get it all back.” Another reflected on how coercive control stripped away their identity, saying, “When people asked what I liked to do, I’d hesitate and say, ‘Not sure.’ Because I didn’t know anymore.” Abuse doesn’t always come with shouting or bruises. Sometimes it’s covert, erasing you one piece at a time until only a shell remains. #DomesticAbuseAwareness

If I had to name two things that show up early and stay, it would be these. First, a sense of being owed. Not loudly, at first. It shows in small expectations: that your plans move for theirs, that your no is a problem to be worked around, that the rule everyone else follows has an exception for them. Over time those small expectations add up to a world where your needs are optional and theirs are urgent. Second, the absence of an accountability trail. When something goes wrong, the explanation always points elsewhere. The mistake is named by you, not them. The apology, if it comes, has a condition attached. And the behaviour that caused the harm is still there next month. You don't need a diagnosis to see either of these. You need a record. Note the expectations, note the outcomes, and note whether any mistake was ever owned and followed by a change. The pattern makes itself visible once you stop evaluating each instance on its own.

Who are Trump's TWO big monsters. My money is on Russell Vought and Elon. Things are going to get sketchy. Stay focused. Vote. Help others. Be ready. This isn't our first rodeo. 🇺🇸
🚨🚨🚨Trump just made another comment about how his “two big monsters” will make history next week. “So, I wonder if I should say this. I’d like a little advice from my two people, my two big monsters. My two monsters are going to be the biggest stars in the country in a week.”

The disappearance of “third spaces” that are neither home nor work, coupled with stigma against married couples with kids spending evenings or weekends outside the home, has created a society of “family pods” that don’t intermingle nearly enough. Children benefit from their parents’ wide friend network. They have more possible godparents or future mentors/connections to jobs, people to take them to school when parents are sick, or many many other advantages. people in the early to mid 1900s simply had better social sense and civic/community mindedness than people now. Not everything translates to an internet analogue, including but not limited to socialization and community for your family.
I'm sorry but this is so fucking lame. Your grandparents partied. Your grandparents hosted, they went to bars, they did shit. They didnt sit around and pride themselves for spending all of their free time staring at their children and mowing the lawn. Get the fuck out of your house. Take your wife out for a drink and listen to some live music. Have a conversation with someone at the bar. Go to a hockey game with your college buddies. Youre not somehow more mature for being homebound. Get a life.
