How Europe exploded the world.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The map at the start is wrong. Alexander the Great reached as far as India, Pytheas possibly reached Iceland, and Hanno sailed as far as Gabon. There's also the Romans with the exploration of Africa, and the city of Cattigara (in Vietnam).

Harry Kane was released by Arsenal at the age of nine. This week, aged 33, he won the Ballon d'Or.
During his acceptance speech, Kane thanked the many people who had helped him throughout his career. It was his words to his mum and dad that stood out to me.
“There was never any pressure from you to become a footballer.”
He spoke about the sacrifices his parents made, taking him to training, travelling to watch him play and encouraging him to work hard, improve and learn.
I think those words become even more interesting when you look back at his early football journey.
Kane started playing for Ridgeway Rovers, a grassroots club, before joining Arsenal. At around nine years old, he was released and returned to grassroots football.
In a previous interview with talkSPORT, former Arsenal academy manager Roy Massey described Kane as a quiet and shy young player who, at the time, didn't appear to have the attributes they believed were needed to become a professional footballer.
Massey later admitted they had got that judgement wrong.
Kane eventually joined Tottenham, spent time on loan at four different clubs and worked his way into their first team.
He went on to become Tottenham's and England's all-time leading goalscorer before moving to Bayern Munich.
There are two things from his journey that I think are particularly relevant to youth football.
Coaches: How much can we really know about a child's potential at eight or nine years old?
Parents: Kane's words show that you can encourage your child to work hard, take them to training, watch them play and help them improve without making becoming a professional footballer the expectation.
Of course, Kane's journey is exceptional and very few children who play football will reach the professional game, let alone win the Ballon d'Or.
I still think there is something to learn from both his early rejection, hard work, desire to learn and the way his parents approached his football.

He is 33 years old 🏴
As a 5 year old, he wrote a simple note "I want to play football"
Met his wife Katie at age 4 as classmates at Larkswood Primary School in Chingford.
Shared his first kiss with Katie when he was about 14
Released by Arsenal's youth team at age 8. His dad put an arm around him and calmly said they'd work harder and find another club, with zero pressure or blame
Spent countless hours as a kid playing 1-v-1 with older brother Charlie in the park behind their house, using trees as goals.
Was reduced to tears by a surprise message from a former schoolteacher before a big Champions League match.
Called becoming a young dad the bravest thing he’d ever done
Said being a dad and husband is the most important part of his life.
In his emotional Ballon d'Or speech he told wife Kate she was his "best friend" and "biggest supporter" and that she'd wanted the award more than he did.
Told his four kids (watching past bedtime) they are "the reason I do this" and that he wants to set an example of hard work and belief.
After scoring a hat-trick, Katie has been known to ground him with "Well done, you can make me a cup of tea when you get home"
His parents never put pressure on him to become a footballer. His dad's classic line was always "Well, let's get on with it then"
Harry Kane launched a mental health foundation on World Mental Health Day to reduce stigma and support positive conversations.

Look at Harry Kane's life. He has put in sooo much work over the years, that this award win is highly supported by majority of people
At 5 years old, he said he wanted to play ball. At 8, he had to leave the Arsenal academy.

You see, it's totally alright to start again, quietly, without anyone noticing.
You can stay loyal to the people who believed in you when it was only the two of you and a ball in the park. And you can still arrive.
Progress doesn't always roar and make noise.
In Harry Kane's case, his progress looked like a father who didn't panic, who just puts an arm around you and says we'll keep going.
Sometimes, your progress looks like someone who loves you enough to bring you back to earth with something as small as a cup of tea.
Sometimes it is simply the soft, patient belief that the next chance will come if you keep showing up with the same heart you started with.

Today Harry has won the Ballon d'Or
And he won it at 33 years old. That is 28 years after he said he wanted to be a footballer.
.
.
Your own award is still coming. You just need to keep working and increase your chances that it comes. That's all.
Keep the motion going.
If Harry had given up on football or stopped playing, then he wouldn't have won the Ballon d'Or.
If you give up on yours and stop your motion, you won't win.
So don't stop today. Keep pushing and let's win together 🫂💪🏾

12 years on, he’s having a drink at Harry Kane’s afterparty staring at the Ballon d’Or that sits next to him.
He believed, what a moment. 👏🏆
In 2005, Harry Kane was chosen to take a photo with David Beckham at the launch of the Beckham Academy as his school's top boys' footballer. Also chosen was Kate Goodland, the top girls' footballer. She's now better known as Kate Kane, after two got married in 2019.
