It's a good night for drinking radlers and contemplating the universe's big questions, like how the hell are the IAAF Rankings going to assign a Performance Score to the athletes yanked in the Continental Cup devil-take-the-hindmost 3Ks/steeples.

The fact that Trump will remove tariffs to help Republicans win elections, but he won’t remove tariffs to help Americans afford necessities, tells you exactly what his priorities are.
BREAKING: The United States is expected to remove 50% tariffs on some Canadian products in a bid to help Maine Senator Susan Collins and other Republicans in the upcoming midterm elections. Full Story: on.wsj.com/4i6fCyU

Trump’s DOJ is unserious — making unserious claims and seeking fear-mongering headlines.
BREAKING: The Trump Justice Department just sent letters to local election officials across California — every county in the state — demanding they identify potential noncitizens on their voter rolls and set aside their ballots. Local officials would "risk significant federal scrutiny" if they failed to comply.

Maybe letting ketamine-addled South African oligarchs control so much of our defense sector is a bad idea. It's already got people killed.

The bigger story is that the richest man in the world helped the Paxton campaign spread a completely made up story about his opponent and no one will face any consequences
Texas Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico's viral hospital rumor has been debunked by time-stamped security footage reviewed by The New York Times — but the bigger story may be why his campaign sat on the evidence while the conspiracy theory exploded across social media for days. Talarico disappeared from the campaign trail for nine days in early October, fueling rampant speculation that he had secretly traveled to an Ohio behavioral health center. His campaign maintained he was home with the flu, and security camera images from his Austin home now back that up. But GOP strategists and journalists are torching the campaign's response as "mind-numbing malpractice" for not releasing the footage sooner. With Election Day just weeks away in one of the biggest Senate races in the country, the question has shifted from where Talarico was to why his team let the narrative spiral unchecked when they had the receipts the entire time. Trump extorted Ukraine in 2019 in a dirty scheme to win re-election in 2020. He is extorting Ukraine again in a dirty scheme to sway midterms in 2026. The first scheme failed. This second will fail too. But why must brave Ukrainians lose their lives for Trump's corruption?

The mood in Ukraine is grim today. There's frustration and outrage here in Kyiv towards the Trump administration over what Ukraine's government, the troops and society believe is a deliberate attempt on the part of Washington to force Ukraine to capitulate to Russia – by withholding intelligence that allows early warning when Russian missiles are incoming, and cutting off Starlink to the military which needs it to strike and for defence against jet drones. These decisions cut intel sharing and restrict Starlink cost lives; at least 5 people killed in Kyiv, 6 more in Lutsk, dozens others badly injured.
NEW: Ukrainian troops have been caught off guard by restrictions on Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet systems that disrupted frontline operations, as Kyiv received no advance warning from its partners of a Russian missile attack on its energy facilities for the second day running, Ukrainian officials and troops tell @FT. ft.com/content/37085602-726a…

I know that at a certain point it makes me sound naive, but I think we should be clear that a president announcing a ceasefire signed by two warring countries that doesn't actually exist is and should be the sort of thing that gets him swiftly removed from office.

We all knew this was where we were headed the day Trump was elected. And the pro-Ukraine Republicans in Congress who claim they didn’t are either lying or stupid.

Scott Bessent, at his confirmation hearing in Jan/2025 to be Treasury Secretary: "the tragedy going on in Ukraine is one of the greatest tragedies of my adult life ... I believe that the sanctions [on Russia] were not fulsome enough. I believe that the previous administration was worried about raising US energy prices during an election season... if I'm confirmed and if President Trump requests ...I will be 100% on board for taking sanctions up." Mark Warner (D-VA): "I very much appreciate your willingness and I hope you will be an advocate for keeping those sanctions on and actually advancing them even further." rev.com/transcripts/scott-be…
