Education is a good example of how crafting policy without HBD is like doing economics with a taboo on supply and demand.
For instance: Several countries outscore the US on the PISA, and each faction in contemporary ed policy debates builds its program around copying a different one: the right-coded experts advocate the strict discipline and homework of Singapore, while the left cites Finland in arguing for small classes and no homework.
But after you control for race, American students already beat both—and literally every other country in the world too!

Weird thing, this: Americans believe in striverism for the useless pursuit of sports, but when applied to academics, it's suddenly robotic and bad.

Dang, if only I had done the standard Dopey Podcaster Algorithm thing and focused mainly on pizza, grape soda, "intel" and Israel ties, declared anyone and everyone a PEDO, and then proclaimed a non-existent mass child rape crisis, none of this would be happening right now! 😭

The best arguments I've seen are that an LLM could generate novel connections no human has ever made and, in that way, might stumble onto a method for replicating intelligence. Then, if you put the LLM in a loop that can write code, test, and read results, the lack of human data becomes less of a barrier.
But I would argue that loop can not produce the cascade doomers worry about fast enough that humans cannot keep up
Once the output (call it an incremental discovery) sits outside existing human data, the model has no examples that tell it what the discovery actually is, whether it works, or how to use it. So it would become more and more ineffective in how it leverages its computational advantage. You'd quickly get to diminishing marginal returns because that's just a limitation of LLMs...they're not intelligent
In other words, any contributions towards intelligence contributed by LLMs would be incremental and detected by humans long before it got to the cascading effect that doomers worry about
So yes, LLM can contribute to new technologies that begin to produce real intelligence. But that leap from accidental discovery to superintelligence is not really feasible in today's environment
Doomers are making too big of a leap. I am conceding the absolute best case scenario for doomers in this analysis and you still don’t get a cascading superintelligence

I’m starting to realize many things, and one of those things is I really don’t actually like a lot of the people I have met in the GOP over the last 12 years.
Some of these people are so ignorant to me. They mock me for saying there’s Russian propaganda on social media and some of them even accuse me of being an Israeli spy for calling out right wing Jew hatred.
Some of these people are literally retarded. Some are just paid off. Either way, I don’t like what I’m seeing.

That's why I'm working on exit plan. I'm applying for an aliyah to return to my homeland of origin.
My kid won't be educated anywhere near the United States. I now see it as a lost cause. Israel's higher education opportunities are far better for my kid. Technion is #1 on the list.

NEW: After I tracked down a passenger from the MV Hondius traveling through several countries after leaving the ship after the hantavirus outbreak began, I discovered New York hadn't been alerted to the Manhattan resident as a possible contact case.
How that happened, and how the CDC has been monitoring the passengers who left the ship on April 24, --with another American woman only appearing on public health authorities' radars after she showed up on a South Pacific island--raises questions about contact tracking in a critical window for outbreak tracking, experts said.
The dual national New Zealand and American was in Taiwan, after attending a global conference in Vietnam, and got into contact with New Zealand on Tuesday, after I had begun making inquiries, having previously not responded to New Zealand's attempts to contact her. It's unknown if the CDC was aware of her locations around the globe.

Eric Hoffer wrote this article about the Jewish state in 1968. Amazing how nothing changed since.
"The Jews are a peculiar people: things permitted to other nations are forbidden to the Jews.
Other nations drive out thousands, even millions of people and there is no refugee problem. Russia did it, Poland and Czechoslovakia did it, Turkey threw out a million Greeks, and Algeria a million Frenchmen. Indonesia threw out heaven knows how many Chinese-and no one says a word about refugees. But in the case of Israel the displaced Arabs have become eternal refugees. Everyone insists that Israel must take back every single Arab. Arnold Toynbee calls the displacement of the Arabs an atrocity greater than any committed by the Nazis.
Other nations when victorious on the battlefield dictate peace terms. But when Israel is victorious it must sue for peace. Everyone expects the Jews to be the only real Christians in this world.
Other nations when they are defeated survive and recover but should Israel be defeated it would be destroyed. Had Nasser triumphed last June he would have wiped Israel off the map, and no one would have lifted a finger to save the Jews.
No commitment to the Jews by any government, including our own, is worth the paper it is written on. There is a cry of outrage all over the world when people die in Vietnam or when two Negroes are executed in Rhodesia. But when Hitler slaughtered Jews no one remonstrated with him.
The Swedes, who are ready to break of diplomatic relations with America because of what we do in Vietnam, did not let out a peep when Hitler was slaughtering Jews. They sent Hitler choice iron ore, and ball bearings, and serviced his troop trains to Norway.
The Jews are alone in the world. If Israel survives, it will be solely because of Jewish efforts. And Jewish resources. Yet at this moment Israel is our only reliable and unconditional ally. We can rely more on Israel than Israel can rely on us. And one has only to imagine what would have happened last summer had the Arabs and their Russian backers won the war to realize how vital the survival of Israel is to America and the West in general.
I have a premonition that will not leave me; as it goes with Israel so will it go with all of us. Should Israel perish the holocaust will be upon us."

The rear elevation of our back garage apartment (2 car garage + door w windows above) looks better from the rear than most modern homes look from the front.
People who hate Celebration are horrible low IQ mongrels

The collective meltdown among most at the far right regarding Péter Magyar's resounding victory in Hungary is probably the most telling moment you will see regarding the so-called "conservative" or "patriotic" movements across the globe. I will elaborate:
Péter Magyar is not a lefty or woke. His ideology is center-right. Tisza will partially follow an even harsher immigration policy and continue some decisions made under Orban, e.g. opposing the EU migration and asylum pact, a core demand of many of the far-right figures. Magyar himself describes his movement a "renewal", not a "revolution".
So why the meltdown? The answer is so unmasking. Péter Magyar and Tisza are no Russian puppets. They haven't forgotten what Soviet-Russia did in 1956. They made a clear stand against the Russian aggressions, both of those in the past and today.
Furthermore, the system of rampant corruption Orban and his allies have built is not limited to Hungary. It has deep ties to foreign actors. It is obvious that it will reveal some very interesting money streams coming from East and West. So, we are not talking about Hungary alone, but an international network of right-wing movements actively collaborating.
Most of those right-wing movements bemoan this development, and this development alone. It unmasks that their political leaning of being "conservative" was but a sharade. It was only about money and a deeply corrupt network benefiting them, with money streams coming from Russia and elsewhere.

Normal, sane, people on X need to come to grips with the following reality
The people getting the clicks on X are largely driven by foreign accounts trying to promote extreme points of views
It happened when the left controlled Twitter, it's happening now when the right is dominant
What this means is that many Americans on the left have been radicalized to think that men can be women and that cops want to kill black people...it also means many Americans on the right have been radicalized to be antisemitic and to think isolationism is the way forward
So if you're still here, try to find sane people, unswayed by engagement, to give you honest takes on what's happening...otherwise you're just joining a cult

1/3 As an Iranian-American who served my adopted country both in uniform and as a civilian, it is sad to watch some Americans act as an extension of the Iranian regime's propaganda machine, downplaying our service members' achievements for no reason other than domestic political score-settling.
I shouldn't have to do this, the results are self-evident, but since these claims started in Tehran and are being spread here, here is a response to each one.
I am thankful that we have a ceasefire. It happened much faster than I expected and it was the right move. But let’s be clear that this war ends (if the ceasefire holds) as a total strategic disaster. The scorecard
Nukes: Iran still has the HEU
Proxies: no change or impact
Missile and drones : Iran demonstrated its arsenal is sustainable and survivable under massive US and Israeli pressure.
Strait of Hormuz: Iran’s leverage to use it as a bargaining chip has dramatically increased.
Regime: killed Khameini but his son is still in place and unless they collapse in the aftermath will probably be just as strong or stronger then when this started.
US allies: totally screwed in the Gulf and horribly strained relations in Europe.
Global economy: major damage.
Israel: will be even more globally isolated after this and no more secure.
Region: as unstable as ever requiring a greater US commitment.
US capacity to be prepared for major contingencies in the IndoPacific set back for years.
But at least we took out their navy and destroyed their useless Air Force 🤷♂️. An epic strategic disaster.
Nobody cares or needs to hear this from me, but I’m just registering my opinion that:
1) LLMs are a totally ordinary technology. But so were cars. Ordinary technologies can have big impacts.
2) They are *very obviously* not reasoning and the way that smart people specifically trick themselves on this point is critical to understanding many things about the world.

Western civilization may never win another war if this keeps up
This is maddening. The radical left, mainstream media, and the woke right are running the exact same playbook with the US/Israel campaign against Iran as they did with Israel in Gaza
They create impossible standards in terms of:
-Zero Casualties
-Zero Economic Disruption
-Zero Uncertainty
-Zero Time to Accomplish the Mission
-Zero Collateral Damage
And everything the bad guys do is actually our fault because we made them do it….same script as Gaza…the bad guys have no agency and it’s actually our fault
Day 32 of the Iran war:
-degraded missile factories, nuclear sites, IRGC bases, and proxy networks
-the Supreme Leader is gone…and his replacement is s vegetable
-all the top leadership is gone…in fact, we don’t even know who’s in charge
Yet the all you hear is endless doomerism
And all of this sounds exactly like the demoralization propaganda from Russia, China, and Iran, that has infiltrated our society for years via social media and retarded influencers chasing click
This isn’t responsible skepticism
It’s weakness…
And you’ll never get peace through strength when the opponent knows you lack resolve and they can just wait you out
This is madness
