🔴 5 BAD 1️⃣ Kent recorded more than 23,000 fly-tipping incidents in 2025/26. Over 2,200 tonnes dumped. 2️⃣ Colchester says £391,000 went on clearing fly-tipping. Money that could have improved communities. 3️⃣ Bristol warns dumped sofas, mattresses and other waste could fuel dangerous unofficial bonfires. 4️⃣ A Wiltshire clothing bank was removed after repeated dumping and problems with emptying it. One less recycling option. 5️⃣ Havering warns some garden waste and communal bin collections face disruption during strike action. The rubbish always ends up somewhere. So does the bill.

🟢 5 GOOD 1️⃣ Hull: eight waste cases brought to court, with fines and costs topping £9,600. 2️⃣ New Romney’s reuse shop expands after saving 31 tonnes of usable items from disposal. Another 2,100 items found new homes. 3️⃣ Crawley collected almost 200 tonnes of food waste in its new service’s first three weeks. 4️⃣ A Port Talbot waste collector who charged £490 then dumped the rubbish has been ordered to pay £2,085.54. 5️⃣ Colchester’s oil-barrel dumper received a suspended prison sentence and 200 hours of unpaid work. Not glamorous. But investigations, reuse and proper collections all count.

Dodging Storm Austen here in Aldridge I managed to get some litter hotspots tackled & retrieve several roadsigns from a hedgerow. Ironically they are Flood warning signs. These are rarely collected up after use. I made a pile of these and reported for collection with litter bags

For 60 years the blue tits of Britain broke into the milk on your doorstep, and all they ever took was the cream. It was first seen in Swaythling, near Southampton, in 1921. A blue tit landed on a bottle, pecked through the cap and drank. By the 1950s every tit in the country seemed to know the trick. Housewives put out saucers, stones and upturned cups. The birds learned to follow the milk float down the street and be waiting at the next step. You will remember the bottle. Silver foil on top, and beneath it 2 inches of thick yellow cream that had risen overnight, with the white milk underneath. The first one down in the morning got it on the porridge. That cream was the whole point of the burglary. A bird cannot digest milk. It has no means of handling the sugar in it. Cream is nearly all fat, with very little sugar, so the tits drank down to the line and stopped. A wild animal weighing 11 grams, with every bird table and berry bush in the street to choose from, worked out how to open a sealed container to get at butterfat. Then the habit died, in about 10 years. Nobody trapped them or changed the caps. The milk changed. It was homogenised so the cream no longer rose, then skimmed so it was hardly there, then moved to a plastic jug in a supermarket. The blue tits inspected the red top, found nothing in it worth stealing, and went back to the hedge. They were the last creatures in Britain to judge a pint of milk on what was actually in it.

Happy Birthday to Lisa! Even on her special day, she was out at the Titford Road canal entrance doing a quick litter-pick. It was a bit messier today, but she got it cleared and left 5 bags restocked and hanging ready for passersby! Have a great birthday, Lisa! #sandwell
