At its peak, World of Warcraft had more than 12 million people paying every month to live in the same world. By 2014, over 100 million accounts had been created. In 7 days it comes back as WoW: Forever. Retail turned into a second job. Weekly vault, a rating to keep up, and the fear that skipping a week leaves you behind. You queue from a city, run the dungeon with four strangers, and they leave without a word. WoW was a game you played because you liked being there, whenever you had a free evening. A stranger helped you with an elite quest in Stranglethorn, and a week later you were in his guild. You spent Friday nights together wiping in Molten Core with 39 people you had never met, and some of them became real friends, the kind you later met in person. Whole servers spent months hauling copper bars and bandages to Ironforge and Orgrimmar so the Gates of Ahn'Qiraj would open. Guilds stormed Orgrimmar to kill Thrall and Stormwind to kill Bolvar, and half the server dropped what they were doing to defend their city. It was more than just a game. It was an entire world, populated with real people playing in it. That's the game I want back on November 4.

BlizzCon 2013. A fan asks Blizzard for vanilla servers. "You think you do, but you don't." September 2026. The WoW: Forever beta opens and a Blizzard dev calls it "the craziest numbers I've seen in 17 years working at Blizzard." We did.

A WoW: Forever world builder spent a year relearning how they built Azeroth 20 years ago. He says it's for "the millions of people who have had their accounts lapse over the years." That's me. My Undead comes back from the dead. Again. Six days. Hearthstone's off cooldown.

Epic just confirmed it's using AI to write code for Unreal Engine 6 and Fortnite. Their engine lead said they worry more about moving too slowly than about AI skepticism. A lot of people will be angry about this. I'm not. Stardew Valley was one guy working alone for years. Give that guy tools that do the boring parts and we get ten of him. The next game you can't put down is coming from a bedroom, and Epic just made the bedroom a lot bigger.

BioShock got all of us to obey with three words: would you kindly. The next BioShock: - announced in 2019 - story reportedly sent back by 2K in 2025 - a third of the studio laid off - seven years later, still no title and no trailer Would you kindly finish the game.

By Fezzy’s logic, every MMO is the same game if you ignore enough of it. Different leveling, combat, progression, class design, social systems. Apparently all irrelevant because you can just choose not to participate. Fucking hell. Even Blizzard understands the distinction, and that’s saying something.
Perfect example of what's wrong with wowtwt. Retail WoW can be played in every way people want to play Forever. "Retail is a job" complaints are from people who FORCE themselves to clear all weekly content, skipping what doesn't give a power boost. They'll do the same in Forever.

every vanilla WoW player did this at least once > yelled LEEROY JENKINS and pulled the whole room > saved for the level 40 mount and still came up short > got ganked in Stranglethorn by a 60 rogue who then sat on you > hit 60, typed ding and got 30 grats from the guild six days

Things I want from a $70 game in 2026: - it works on day one - I actually own it - no battle pass - no "we hear you" tweet three weeks after launch

The fog in Silent Hill was a trick to hide what the PS1 couldn't draw. On PS2 they could render much more. Team Silent kept the fog anyway. Your radio crackles. Something's out there. You can't see five feet. A hardware limit became the scariest thing in the game. They cooked.

Likes being private is fun. People who otherwise wouldn’t like a post like this (blizzard people) can. Ofc, I would never, ever, leak such a thing. Just funny. The reflexive Blizzard defenders don’t know how much strife and discontent there is in the company.
Kul'tiran housing decor bundle in the store! Ever wondered why i dgaf about having a professional relationship with Blizzard anymore? When their words mean nothing, Interviews are a waste of time. us.shop.battle.net/en-us/pro…

I love that Morrowind had NO quest markers. The journal: go east, cross the bridge, find the tower. Good luck. We found it. Often via a tomb full of ghosts. Then an exec read the playtests: - players got lost - players had fun anyway Can't have that. Paint the ledges yellow.

Shadow of the Colossus came out 21 years ago this month. It was incredible, the game had none of the recent "standards" of the industry: no towns in it, no shops, no side quests, no XP. You had your horse, a sword and just had to charge these giants spread across a huge empty land, and the game was confident that was all you needed. And it was. Playing it on a PS2 late at night with the lights off was something else.

Resident Evil 4 is 21 years old and it's still more fun than most games released this year. - the chainsaw you heard before you saw it - the church bell that saved your life - "What're ya buyin'?" - playing Tetris in your attache case - suplexing villagers - "LEON! HELP!" No battle pass. No microtransactions. No day-one patch. Just a finished game you actually owned.

KOTOR is the greatest Star Wars media ever made, and I don’t think it’s particularly close.

When the rot is terminal, you get BioWare. When there’s still something worth saving, you get Sucker Punch layoffs.

The advent of AI will purge the mentally ill activists out of the industry. AI will save gaming.
