Breaking News: being part of a doomsday cult is bad for your mental health
EXC: AI staff complain of mental toll over fears of threat of society Multiple staff at Britain’s AI Security Institute (AISI) have been signed off work with stress and are undergoing counselling Tight schedules for testing unreleased AI models, plus alarm over rapid rollout and growing capabilities of AI, have fuelled low morale and burnout at AISI, acc to four people with knowledge of the matter It’s part of a wider phenomenon across leading AI companies: staff at Anthropic, OpenAI and Google DeepMind have also publicly complained of similar issues, with many top researchers quitting due to the mental toll or coming to a belief that their work was unsafe for public release W/ @madhumita29 ft.com/content/60870960-f433…

A lot of people who claim to care about women in tech are going along with the NYT passive aggressive framing of Mayer as a dumb blond here.

Just to be clear, as I don’t see a lot of folks pointing this out or acknowledging this: Bolsonaro also formally asked for polling stations to be kept open another two hours!

"Terence Tao, you dumbshit" is not a judgment I would have ever thought possible before a few months ago. Tao complains "AI is generating terrible proofs: great results, but no care for elegance, for who understands them, or for what comes next". You've just described what you are supposed to do as a human being, fool. It's not the chisel's job to make a sculpture look beautiful; those choices belong to the mind and hand of the sculptor. I've been writing software for 50 years. If I, a crusty old fart from the days of punched cards, can accept that I will never write a significant amount of code by hand again - that my job is steering and quality-checking an AI now - then what is *your* excuse for mental inflexibility, golden genius boy? I'm pretty sure that if AIs actually had enough mathematical taste to be consistently elegant, and then were good enough at explanations to make their proof accessible, which is what you say you want... ...you'd be bitching harder, because you'd be entirely obsolete. Quit your whining, you spoiled primadonna. Go do your job.

Science is not some hobby that serves the self actualization of people in a publicly sponsored job placement program. It is the systematic search for truth.
Wow, over 1,000 mathematicians have now joined the Association for Human Mathematics (AHM), committing to: > NOT publish AI generated math papers > NOT work with frontier labs > 654 of them went even further to NOT even use AI in their research, at all

stealmybitcoin was just solved by @killa. Or rather solved a few hours ago. He was confused because the wallet address was wrong. Turns out the server didn't have the right wallet :P
I took a closer look at the stealmybitcoin.com CTF, which aims to demonstrate that PHP2SHELL is not realistically exploitable. So I gave it a try. Note: My analysis could be wrong, and I'm more than happy to be proven otherwise. Here’s what I found: • The server responds with Server: nginx and X-Powered-By: PHP/8.4.26. • My differential fingerprinting scanner independently confirmed at least PHP 8.2+ • Hypotheses: I considered two possible setups: ◦ nginx → PHP-FPM ◦ nginx → Apache → PHP-FPM/mod_php • After comparing the server's behavior against local test environments, the closest match appears to be nginx → PHP cli-server. Plot twist: the response behavior is consistent with the PHP cli-server serving a static index.html rather than an index.php. If that's indeed the case, the challenge appears to be intentionally made unexploitable. My conclusion (for now) is that I'm questioning whether this is a good-faith challenge. Happy to be corrected if I've missed something!

Someone has created a vulnerable PHP website, loaded it with a Bitcoin wallet, and challenged the Internet to hack into it and they can keep the Bitcoin. It has a running timer to show if the PHP exploitability was over-hyped. stealmybitcoin.com/

Heads up, @OpenAI and @AnthropicAI. Rumor reaches my ears that you're doing a stupid thing, and should stop before you damage yourselves. I hear you've now nerfed your models so that when people try to use them to clean the spamware and spyware out of their televisions, you block that. If you really want Chinese open-weight models and open-source projects like OpenWaldo to eat your lunch, crippling your models so that people paying expensive subscriptions can't use them for completely legitimate purposes is a great way to accomplish this. If, on the other hand, you'd rather have a volume business, maybe stupid arbitrary restrictions that look like they have the sole purpose of protecting corporate sleazeballs aren't such a good idea. A word to the wise should be sufficient.

The only way out is through. They're calling it the Bugpocalypse. LLMs are being used to find long-hidden cracks in the software infrastructure, and it's happening at a furious rate. 3% of all compromises in computing history happened in the last week, claims one source? I believe it. There are people saying public access to the frontier models ought to be locked out, or heavily guardrailed, over this. The problem with that idea can be summed up in one sentence: when lockpicks are outlawed, only outlaws will have lockpicks. The lockpicks will be Chinese open-weight models, if nothing else. There's no way to stop those from becoming ubiquitous. There are two futures in front of us. One in which only the bad guys have lockpicks, and security holes go undiscovered until they're exploited. Another in which everybody has lockpicks and is aggressively red-teaming their own software so it gets fixed before the holes are exploited. The corpus of human code is huge but finite. The number of defects in it has to be finite too. We can fix those defects now; we have a million friendly robots to do it with. The only way out is through.

My husband has used AI agents to revive old fonts, ornaments, & cuts from 19th century newspapers. The agents even built an editor where you can create your own invitations/pamphlets/cards using old cuts & fonts. Have been using it for @Quillette invitations already font-revival.com/

AI doomers don’t mention Y2K so much because it can be used as an example of humanities ability to mitigate tech risk without top down control.
In 1999 @ESYudkowsky weighed in on Y2K bug, predicting “major catastrophe” (also: the singularity by 2025!) diyhpl.us/~bryan/irc/extropi…

Our A.I. risk aversion mindset has been conditioned to be centralized and top down rather than rapid distributed risk reduction efforts. Imagine if patching Y2K bugs required access to special software prohibited by company or government.

They both flopped HARD. It’s notable that ‘You Can See Everything’ is dominating. Why? Outrage fatigue?
The Social Reckoning and MUSK doc both look like slop techlash memes wrapped in high production budgets.
