Ci sono dischi che, semplicemente, appartengono a un genere e altri che contribuiscono a definirne l’identità. Melissa appartiene alla seconda categoria. Primo album in studio dei Mercyful Fate, dopo l’EP omonimo del 1982, è una delle espressioni più compiute e personali dell’heavy metal dei primi anni Ottanta. La musica dei danesi è un intreccio di riff affilati, architetture chitarristiche elaborate e atmosfere lugubri, sulle quali si staglia la voce inconfondibile di King Diamond. L’immaginario occulto e satanico non è un semplice ornamento, attraversa le composizioni, ne determina il carattere e trova nella teatralità del cantante il suo interprete ideale. Da Evil a Into the Coven, fino alla monumentale Satan’s Fall, ogni brano contribuisce a costruire un universo sonoro riconoscibile e inquietante. Melissa non fu soltanto un grande esordio, ma un disco capace di ridisegnare i confini dell’heavy metal e lasciare un’impronta riconoscibile su intere generazioni di musicisti metal. La sua miscela di occultismo, iconografia satanica, atmosfere maligne e violenza musicale avrebbe alimentato soprattutto quella corrente più nera del metal che, negli anni successivi, avrebbe trovato nel black metal la propria espressione più radicale. Non a caso, molti dei musicisti che avrebbero dato vita a quella scena riconobbero nei Mercyful Fate un riferimento fondamentale.
