Uganda remains Ebola-free, with no confirmed cases recorded since the country declared the Bundibugyo virus disease outbreak over on July 28, 2026, Minister of Health Dr. Chris Baryomunsi has announced.
Addressing the media today, Dr. Baryomunsi confirmed that all 60 contacts linked to the recent Ebola case involving a Kenyan traveller have completed the mandatory 21-day monitoring period without developing symptoms and have been discharged.
He reassured the public that Kasese has no confirmed Ebola cases and has recorded no deaths from the disease, while emphasizing that vigilance remains critical as transmission continues in the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The Ministry has intensified screening at border points and Entebbe International Airport, strengthened community surveillance and expanded cross-border support, including establishing three treatment units in the DRC with a combined capacity of 240 beds.
Dr. Baryomunsi called for continued public cooperation with health measures and stronger regional collaboration to contain Ebola at its source and protect communities from further spread.
For information or to report suspected cases, call the Ministry of Health toll-free hotline on 0800-100-066, send an alert SMS to 6767, or use U-Report on 8500. #OpenGovUg
UGANDA ADVANCES EAC INTEGRATION, CONSULTS ON VARIABLE GEOMETRY
KAMPALA, 23 October 2026: Uganda has reported progress in advancing the East African Community (EAC) Monetary Union, with negotiations on most required protocols largely completed and the Statistics Bill signed, as the country pushes forward regional integration during its EAC chairmanship.
#EACIntegration
The Ministry of East African Community Affairs (MEACA) convened a national multi-stakeholder consultative workshop at Protea Hotel Kampala Skyz to discuss how variable geometry can support the EACโs political integration.
Key highlights:
๐Monetary Union: Uganda has made progress in unblocking stalled areas, completing most negotiations on the required protocols and advancing the Statistics Bill.
๐Political Federation: The drafting of the EAC Constitution is ongoing, alongside efforts to advance consultations among Partner States.
๐Flexible integration: Makerere Universityโs Professor Phillip Kasaija explained that variable geometry allows Partner States ready to move forward with integration to proceed while others join when prepared.
๐พPractical steps: Recommendations included establishing pilot groups, adopting flexible timelines, strengthening dialogue and technical support, and taking incremental steps towards political confederation.
๐คRegional cooperation: Discussions also highlighted efforts to eliminate Non-Tariff Barriers that impede trade and strengthen cooperation in areas including security, education, health, transport, trade and infrastructure.
The workshop builds on the EAC Summitโs 2017 adoption of political confederation as a transitional model towards the East African Political Federation, in line with Article 123(6) of the EAC Treaty.

Professor Phillip Kasaija, Department of Political Science, @Makerere University, delivered a presentation on the application of variable geometry in the East African Communityโs pursuit of political integration, noting that Article 123(6) of the Treaty is central to the discussion.๐ค
He began by tracing the historical efforts towards a political federation and observed that each country has specific issues that a federation may not address. For this reason, the preferred approach was to proceed first through a political confederation.#EACintegration
Turning to the EAC specifically, he explained that the flexibility of variable geometry allows Partner States that are ready to advance integration efforts to do so immediately, while others follow when ready.
This flexibility has already been introduced in the Community. He described variable geometry as a pragmatic response to the diverse circumstances of Partner States, and urged the Community not to become its own enemy through multiple overlapping blocs and bans.
He recommended that variable geometry be pursued in the political federation, supported by the following strategies:
1.Establishing pilot groups for integration, with a core group serving as a model for others.
2.Adopting flexible timelines for achieving political integration milestones.
3.Creating specialized integration domains, allowing some Partner States to advance while others prepare.
4.Taking incremental steps, such as first establishing a confederation to build trust among Partner States.
5.Introducing policies that Partner States may opt in or out of, depending on their readiness and priorities.
6.Providing technical and financial support to Partner States that are ready to advance.
7.Strengthening dialogue among Partner States.

While delivering his remarks, Dr. Andrew Musiime, Commissioner of Political Affairs (MEACA), shared the commitments made so far, including the ongoing drafting of the EAC Constitution.
He also mentioned ongoing efforts to address the elimination of Non-Tariff Barriers (NTBs) that impede trade, despite challenges in reducing them.
Notably, Dr. Musiime shared that #Uganda, as Chair, has made progress in unblocking stalled areas around the monetary union pillar, with most of the required protocol negotiations completed and the statistics bill signed.
Another area ๐บ๐ฌ has advanced over the last couple of months is convening a dedicated session of Ministers of the Community to discuss human resource challenges.
๐คAreas of cooperation discussed included:
๐ชDefence
๐ชชInter-State Security
๐Education, Science and Technology
๐Transport, Communication and โ
๏ธMeteorology
๐ฅHealth
Others included:
๐ดEnvironment and Natural Resources
โข๏ธTrade and Investment
๐๏ธInfrastructure Development
๐งโโ๏ธAviation and Maritime
Standards, among others
Dr. Musiime went on to highlight deliberate steps by the Summit, such as the:
1. Establishment of the East African Legislative Assembly
2.Establishment of the East African Court of Justice
3. Adoption of the Protocol on Foreign Policy Coordination
He also pointed to the operationalisation of councils of cooperation in defence and inter-state security, as well as sectoral policy coordination.
These steps shape the trade we do, the jobs we seek and how freely we move across the region. Stay informed on what EAC integration means for you. #EACIntegration
