Urban birds are great! How can we manage our landscapes to protect different attributes of their diversity? Check out our new paper in @ESAApplications doi.org/10.1002/eap.2713 @j_r_rhodes @martine_maron @MGEMitchell

@thebatmobike's research in the @VancouverSun! Bats in cities need freshwater and insect-supporting plants, and don't like bright city lights vancouversun.com/news/local-…

Forest fragments provide several ESS even if small. Big trees play an important role in this regard. Paper calls for conservation of multi-functional forest fragments in and around cities.
Thanks @MGEMitchell for a fantastic collaboration!!
@ubcforestry
Excited to share a new paper with @TahiaDevisscher in Landscape and Urban Planning on forest #ecosystemservices and #multifunctionality along an urban-rural gradient. We found higher ES at rural end but no effect of forest fragment size: sciencedirect.com/science/ar…
Bucket list item checked ☑️ off: meeting @DavidSuzuki !! Had the opportunity to chat with him and tell him a bit about the amazing research happening @ubcfarm. Grew up with The Nature of Things so this was a huge thrill.

Fantastic #ESA2022 workshop on acoustic monitoring just wrapped up. @TessaRhinehart, @rpatlyon et al gave a great run through of setup, deployment, data retrieval, analysis, classification, and ecological interpretation! Looking forward to putting these learnings into practice

What is a #ClimateEmergency Declaration? Are they doing anything? How do they expose simplistic assumptions about how emergencies are governed in law? If you’re interested in #climatechange, emergencies and law, check out my new article @TELjournal: cambridge.org/core/journals/…
Excited to announce that I received a @NSERC_CRSNG Discovery Grant! Looking forward to using this support to better understand landscape multifunctionality.

Matthew Mitchell (@MGEMitchell) received a @NSERC_CRSNG Discovery Grant for his project on "identifying multi-scale drivers of biodiversity and ecosystem services to build multifunctional working landscapes."
Excited to be joining the Editorial Board of @ESAFrontiers! One of my favourite journals, so I'm excited to contribute to its content and learn more about the editorial process.
Come work with me and @KaiChanUBC on understanding the landscape drivers of bat diversity and abundance in Metro Vancouver!! 🦇🦇🦇With a particular focus on the endangered little brown myotis. Funding available for a two year MSc project - more info: mgemitchell.weebly.com/oppor…

🌳New Paper!
I'm excited to share the most significant piece of my PhD research, out today in @esaecosphere!
"Woody perennial polycultures in the U.S. Midwest enhance biodiversity and ecosystem functions"

This paper was a team effort - so🧵
Perennial agriculture enhances a ton of biodiversity metrics and ecosystems services compared to conventional ag! New paper out in @ESAEcosphere led by @Maayanster, with @KaiChanUBC @smsmukler @HaroldEyster et al. esajournals.onlinelibrary.wi…

Back from the field, we and co-authors @smsmukler @MGEMitchell, A Czajewska, @keefekeeley, @ajverster,@KaiChanUBC examined a whole range of attributes. I designed #Bayesian multispecies abundance models of birds in @mcmc_stan to examine alpha and beta diversity across farm types
So nice to publish data from a decade ago collected by amazing (then) undergrad @hartley_emery! New paper in Agriculture, Ecosystems and Environment: Landscape effects on aphids, parasitoids, and hyperparasitoids. With @ElenaBennett and @bio_diverse. sciencedirect.com/science/ar…
How do biosphere reserves in the EU affect the coproduction of #ecosystemservices? A fantastic international working group led by @MatthiasSchr worked on this question. Now out in @ESandPeople! tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.…
