Africa is facing two development timelines at once: finishing the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals while preparing for the continent’s longer-term Agenda 2063.
At the Alamein Africa Forum, Mahmoud Mohieldin, UN Special Envoy on Financing the SDGs, argued that progress will require faster investment in education, health, electrification, skills and emerging technologies such as AI.
His message is clear: the SDGs remain unfinished business and Africa will need significantly more investment in sustainable growth to close the gap while building for the future.

A pleasure at Building Bridges in Geneva to meet Dr Mahmoud Mohieldin, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Financing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
His remarks reinforced a crucial point: global ambition must translate into investment that works in African realities.
On Thursday, @UNDP and #DBSA will discuss the biodiversity investment platform we are developing together.
Nature already supports our economies: wetlands help reduce flooding, healthy catchments support water supplies, and soils and pollinators sustain food production.
We need financing that rewards protecting these systems, delivers credible results and shares benefits fairly with communities.
Also lovely to reconnect with Cornis van der Lugt, an old UNEP colleague. Some bridges predate the summit.
