Student loans were sold to students as "you'll earn more, so it's only fair you pay some of that back towards your education cost"
Unless changed, of the five plans students are on - three of the repayment thresholds will now be *below* the minimum wage.

A parliamentarian told me, during the original online safety bill debate, that they felt they couldn’t speak their mind because a bereaved parent was present in the gallery.
Bereaved parents are now a key reason why the government is pursuing a social media ban for under-16s.
This is despite pretty much all the children’s charities (including the Molly Russell Foundation, ironically) opposing the measure, it being well-understood that the ban has failed in Australia, and there being little evidence that it will make anyone safer or happier in the UK.
A pretty miserable situation, but some great reporting on how suicide has been weaponised by campaigners despite little evidence that suicides are increasing by @duncanrobinson in @TheEconomist.

So you're going to have to hand over your passport or driving license in order to join a public debate on social media.
This isn't compatible with free speech - you shouldn't have to prove your identity to read ordinary legal content online.
Exclusive:
Social media companies will be required to implement “hard checks” on people’s ages such as demanding passports or driving licences under plans to stop children from using their platforms
The government is due to announce plans for a social media ban for under-16s in the coming weeks amid concerns that children are being exposed to harmful content
Ministers want to take a harder line on age verification to ensure that children are not using the platforms after concerns that a similar social media ban in Australia has had little impact
Under plans being considered by ministers, those using the sites will be required to submit their passports or driving licences or undergo credit checks to verify their age
The Australian government admitted this year that more than 70 per cent of under-16s still had “some access” to platforms three months after the law changed in December 2025
Children reported that it was “easy” to circumvent the ban. They are only required to undergo basic screening — where users take a selfie and artificial intelligence estimates their age — to access platforms if they do not wish to upload official documents. In the most brazen cases, children were able to bypass the restrictions by drawing beards onto their faces
Others have resorted to using virtual private networks (VPNs) to bypass checks by pretending they are based in another country, or pointing their phone’s camera at a screen showing an adult-looking face

My disdain for this authoritarian stuff is vast. "Sorry you're kicked off the entomology Facebook group because you're 15!", "sorry can't look at the wedding photos of your cousin on Facebook". Just protecting you!
And it's clear everyone will be subjected to this overreach.
The quality of many new builds is just terrible. This building is about a decade old and the facade that is not structural but poorly just glued on, is already falling off in several places.

All for the homes but why on earth do they have to look like that?

this is really, really, really, really bad. it's bad that there are no longer institutions that we can trust to at least try, a little, to stay above the fray. it's doubly bad when they are the most prestigious truthseeking institutions in the world. i want a different timeline
Editorial: The death of Jason Arday must prompt deep reflection

Arday was an academic fraud whose life story was fake. Editorial falsely treats former as unproven allegation, omits mention of latter, defames those who covered the scandal as racist. Calls him "autistic Black scholar" despite no proven autism diagnosis.

Serbia is still -sort of- trying to join the EU. Mladić's arrest and extradiction to The Hague was one of the conditions and thye met that. Yet they still celebrate this evil waste of oxygen.
