Beneath the endless desert sands lie the buried memories of a people—Uyghur Films. Since September 2016, Uyghur books, films, and music videos were collected and destroyed. Fearing punishment for possessing people buried them in the desert. Wind uncovered them recently as you saw

chinese.uhrp.org/insights/%e…

Spoke at the launch of the excellent @ipac China Audit this evening in @UKParliament and suggested it should be sent to all Members of @HouseofCommons and @UKHouseofLords Chaired by @MPIainDS it was good to hear a variety of voices raised - including @TomTugendhat @Meg_HillierMP and @ChrisLawSNP - all highlighting the multiple threats posed by the CCP regime. Read here: xitter.cf/ipacglobal/status/2110…
Today, IPAC launches the “UK-China Audit: A New Parliamentary Consensus.” Endorsed by frontbench lawmakers from every major UK opposition party and senior government MPs, the audit expresses the parliamentary consensus on the UK-China relationship. 🔗 Audit: ipac.global/campaigns/ipac-l…

This document is the fruit of six years of consensus building on China. Over 50 debates in the UK alone, countless interventions, and a hell of a lot of graft, Parliament (and the public) have a new consensus. Only the government lags behind. But not for long.

Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong turns 30 today, behind bars. The outstanding campaigner of his generation, Joshua merely advocated for what was promised Hong Kong. He faces compound prosecutions for his effective, peaceful work. Leave him a greeting: freejoshuawong.uk

Modern Slavery and tainted supply chains: Helpful response from Minister @AnasSarwar following up the failure to root out modern slavery from Government procurement -especially NHS - and following @HumanRightsCtte Inquiry & Report & @UKHouseofLords debate. Now arranging a meeting to track progress.
The debate on the @HumanRightsCtte report on modern day slavery and supply chains. Powerful and eloquent speeches from all sides demanding more urgent action to root out goods that are made by slave labour in places like Xinjiang and Congo - and which increase dangerous dependency on dictatorial regimes, compromise resilience and destroy British jobs.” Watch / read my contribution here: davidalton.net/2026/09/09/de… @andyburnham @Ed_Miliband @KemiBadenoch @EdwardJDavey @Nigel_Farage @UKAntiSlavery

Taiwan policy is a total time-warp. It’s not the 1970s any more. “One China” policies were for a time when Taipei claimed the right to rule the whole of China, and it was necessary to decide who could legitimately make that claim. Most countries chose Beijing. That’s what “One China” means. But Taiwan completely abandoned this claim a long time ago, and even made constitutional amendments to underline it. Why, then, do we persist with these policies as if the political reality is unchanged? “One China” policies are obsolete, and the ambiguity they create is a moving target for Beijing’s grey zone activity. We should junk them and develop something fit for purpose. We cannot hope to deter Beijing’s ambitions unless we are clearer on what Taiwan is, and what our consequent red-lines should be. @FreddyLim

Huawei now manages Spain's sensitive wiretap data. Other EU countries say that puts the entire bloc at risk. Spain's interior ministry signed a €12.3 million contract giving Huawei responsibility for storing and managing judicial wiretap data. One EU lawmaker called it "poisoning the well of European intelligence sharing," not just a Spanish problem. Spain's defense ministry denies any risk. This sits inside a much bigger pattern. PM Pedro Sánchez has visited Xi Jinping four times in four years, more than any other EU leader. Chinese investment in Spain has doubled in the past year. Chery built its first European factory there. CATL and Hithium are placing battery gigafactories in Zaragoza and Navarra, localizing production specifically to dodge EU tariffs on Chinese EVs. Shanghai was just named the first Asian city of honor at Barcelona's biggest festival. China is also getting the public on its side. 54% of Spaniards now view China favorably, compared to just 30% for the US. Other EU states see the danger clearly. On his last Beijing trip, Sánchez met with the founder of a Chinese wind-turbine company whose UK factory plan had just been blocked on national-security grounds elsewhere in Europe.
