Geen betaalmuur, dank @barteeckhout ! demorgen.be/meningen/de-moeg…

Charlie Munger thought McDonald's did a better job educating people than Harvard. He wasn't joking. In 2010, sitting next to Warren Buffett at Berkshire Hathaway's annual meeting, Munger explained why he considered McDonald's one of America's most underrated educational institutions. His argument had almost nothing to do with hamburgers. McDonald's takes people at the very beginning of their working lives. For many of them, it's their first real job. And before they move on, it teaches them things that are surprisingly difficult to teach in a classroom: show up on time, follow a system, deal with customers, take responsibility and do the job you're being paid to do. Munger had once made the same argument while speaking at a major university. He told the room: “I thought McDonald's succeeded better as an educator than the people in the university did.” His point wasn't that people stayed at McDonald's forever. It was almost the opposite. Many started there, learned how to function in a real workplace, and eventually moved on to much bigger jobs. Munger believed McDonald's deserved far more credit for that than it received. Then Buffett jumped in — and agreed. He said some of the most important lessons of his own life came when he was just 13 or 14 years old, working for a newspaper boss named Charlie Peterson. Long before Berkshire Hathaway. Long before he became one of the richest men in the world. Buffett was just a kid learning lessons from his first boss that he still remembered decades later. Munger and Buffett were making the same point from opposite ends of extraordinary careers: sometimes the place that teaches you how to work isn't a university. It's the place expecting you to show up on time tomorrow morning.

Laat dat cijfer even bezinken.

#QuartierNord #ShitHole

Late August 1943. In occupied Denmark, a long, strange, relatively gentle occupation finally breaks down into open confrontation. The Danish government refuses a German ultimatum and resigns rather than betray its own people, the Danish navy scuttles its own fleet rather than hand it over, and the stage is set for one of the most heroic rescues of the entire war. Denmark's occupation had been unlike any other. When Germany overran it in 1940, the Danes, tiny and indefensible, had chosen not to fight to the death, and in return the Germans had allowed Denmark a remarkable degree of self-rule, keeping its own government, its own king, its own parliament, even its own small military, as a supposed model protectorate. For a while an uneasy accommodation held. But by 1943, with Germany losing the war, Danish resistance was growing, strikes and sabotage spreading, and the population increasingly defiant. The Germans decided to crack down. On August 28 they issued an ultimatum to the Danish government, demanding it impose harsh new measures, ban strikes and public gatherings, and introduce the death penalty for sabotage, essentially demanding that the Danes help the Germans crush their own resistance. The Danish government refused. It judged the demands unconstitutional and a betrayal of its own people, and rather than comply, the whole government resigned. With no cooperative Danish government left, the Germans threw off the pretense, declared martial law, and moved to seize full control, disarming the Danish military in an operation called Safari. And here the Danes made their defiance physical. Rather than let their navy fall into German hands, Danish sailors scuttled the fleet, deliberately sinking their own warships in the harbors, and some ships made a dash for neutral Sweden. They would not hand their navy to the occupier. But the most important consequence was still to come, and it is one of the shining moments of the war. With the takeover, the Germans finally moved to deport Denmark's Jews to the death camps, as they had done everywhere else. Word leaked out, and the Danish people responded in a way almost no other occupied nation did. Ordinary Danes, warned in time, hid their Jewish neighbors and then, in a spontaneous, nationwide effort in October, spirited almost the entire Jewish population, around 7,000 people, across the water to safety in neutral Sweden in fishing boats, night after night. Because of that, the overwhelming majority of Danish Jews survived the war, one of the very few places in occupied Europe where that was true. All of it flowed from the breakdown that began with the refusal and resignation on these August days. The Danes had finally said no, and in saying no, they set in motion the rescue of their Jewish countrymen.

I’ve spent many weeks doing fieldwork in Tibet, sitting above these enormous, deeply incised Himalayan river systems and seeing firsthand just how geologically active this landscape is. So spare me the climate-change grift every time a natural disaster strikes. Catastrophic glacial outburst floods are not new. The 1981 Zhangzangbo GLOF released ~20 million m³ of water and debris into Nepal, with estimated peak discharge approaching 16,000 m³/s. The Himalayas experienced enormous GLOFs long before today's atmospheric CO₂ concentrations. If it happened naturally in the past, we should expect it to happen naturally again in the future—regardless of atmospheric CO₂. Turning a horrific loss of life into an immediate climate-change narrative without demonstrating that CO₂ caused this particular event isn't attribution. It's opportunism. And the people exploiting tragedy to do it are grifters.

The EU just ruined my small business I have worked on for five years. I did 12 hour days for months at the beginning. I have no words.
🇪🇺 Friend runs small EU e-com New packaging law (PPWR) applies today By his estimate it will cost him ~€10k/year just to keep shipping across Europe - Separate reporting per country - Separate EPR fees per country - Often need Authorized Rep per country "single market" btw 🫡

Charlie Munger: "I always liked the story of P.J. O'Rourke, who said, 'The last Communist dictator of Albania was a pure Communist. He threw out the Russian embassy because they'd lost the pure faith. Then he kicked out the Chinese Communists because they'd lost the pure faith. Finally, he was only comfortable with two places in the world. One was the Communist dictator of North Korea and the other was the English department at Yale.'" 🤣 "There is a lot of extreme craziness in some of the liberal arts — and they select people who share their craziness."

Overheid: “Mooi. Over die €10.000 waardestijging betaal je 36% belasting: €3.600.” Jij: “Maar mijn inflatie was 8%. Mijn reële rendement (mijn koopkrachtwinst) was dus slechts ongeveer €2.000.”
