Here is the irony that Trump overlooks when he hints at making Russia our 51st state. I doubt he is serious about trying to do this, but if he seriously tried to do it, it would have to be by force against the will of the vast majority of Canadians. Suppose he successfully conquered Canada and made it the 51st state. Most Canadians would be mad as hell, and they would oppose him by joining the Democratic Party (or at least they would vote for the Democrats.) Canada would become a Democratic state, which means the Democrats will narrow the Republican lead in the Senate by 2 votes. And since the population of Canada is just a bit over that of California, Canada would get about 50 seats in the House, flipping the House to the Democrats.
As a Democrat and a strong anti-Trumper, I say Canada should remain a free and sovereign nation. But if Trump does the unthinkable and conquers Canada, I say, "Welcome to the opposition!"
