Far-left Salt Lake County Mayor @JennyWilsonUT thinks CLOSING and DEMOLISHING Oxbow county jail and RELEASING criminals is a good idea and wants to raise our taxes to do so.
A 2025 legislative audit of SLCo jail showed 300,000 inmates were RELEASED EARLY due to overcrowding resulting in 38% recidivism rate in 90 days and high rates of failure to appear in court.
The same County Council approved reopening Oxbow in 2025 to increase capacity to prevent overcrowding releases. Now, they want to demolish it and create jail diversion programs.
The net increase in the jail beds under this proposed budget would be 252 by my math. We need about 1000 new beds to match the population increase - NOT diversion programs and NOT demolishing Oxbow.
