This is similar to what I’m hearing. China has previously said it is committed to the regional rotation. The question is: how strongly held is that position?
In UN diplo circles there is wide-spread speculation that Lana Nusseibeh will prevail in the race for UN Secretary General. Except China, I'm told, remains committed to supporting a candidate from Latin American or the Caribbean, raising prospect that race is still open.

The UAE's Lana Nusseibeh's path to becoming the next UN Secretary-General may hinge on how firmly China sticks to its previously stated position that it's Latin America's turn to hold the post. globaldispatches.org/p/will-…

My thoughts on Lana Nusseibeh’s late entry into the SG race: She will likely have the support of the P5, but she will certainly face questions from the broader UN membership about the UAE’s foreign policy, including on Sudan. globaldispatches.org/p/will-…

The biggest question facing her candidacy is Sudan. Does she side with the UN experts who've reported on UAE links to the genocidal Rapid Support Forces, or does she continue to tow the UAE line and deny it (all evidence to the contrary)?
Pretty big deal, as you can imagine this is a candidate who won't get a P5 veto and may strongly be favored by at least one P5 state. Also a real test of the unspoken norms at the UN, where it's supposed to be Latin America's "turn" for SG

I'd say it's more of a rebuke of Israel's conduct in Gaza... globaldispatches.org/p/the-n…
When Jake Sullivan was told of South Africa's opposition to the US's support for Israel's Genocide in Gaza, he responded: "Fuck South Africa" When the Nobel Committee was told of South Africa's Navi Pillay's work to hold Israel accountable for its genocide, they gave her the Nobel Peace Prize. This is a rebuke of BOTH the Trump AND the Biden administrations' efforts to undermine international law.

The race for UN Secretary General just got more complicated. My analysis of what comes next, and how to assess the strength of frontrunner @RGrynspan, following today's straw poll --> globaldispatches.org/p/the-r…

This is not a great outcome for Grynspan, despite being the frontrunner. Her previous ballot, last week, only had 3 discourage votes. This time, 6 Security Council members are opposing. The Oct 16 straw poll will be decisive. We will learn if her opposition comes from the P5.
UN Security Council straw poll results for Rebeca Grynspan of Costa Rica appears to be in lead: 9 encourage, 6 discourage. Color-coded ballots tentatively on Oct 16

The Security Council is holding its 5th straw poll tomorrow to test the viability of the candidates for Secretary General. The frontrunner is a highly respected senior UN official whose parents were Jewish WW2 refugees who fled to Costa Rica. globaldispatches.org/p/the-r…
