It is an honour and a privilege to have been elected Leader of @Lambeth_Council
After 20 years of Blairite entrenchment and decline with Lambeth Labour this is not going to be easy but we are up to the challenge and have exciting plans for our Borough👇🏼

Well done Green-led Lambeth Council!
I remember visiting here with @pete556 in 2021(?) when I was @TheGreenParty co-leader and he was a local Green councillor campaigning to save the estate.
Now he's Housing Cabinet member and he followed through and saved it 👏 Bravo, Pete!

🚨BREAKING NEWS: We're absolutely delighted that Lambeth Council Cabinet members have just voted to save Central Hill Estate and Cressingham Gardens from a planned demolition. This follows a near 15 year-long battle led by residents and the @SaveCressingham and @savecentralhill campaigns, with four separate judicial reviews and an independent inquiry.
The Council found a comprehensive redevelopment of the two 1960s estates to no longer be financially viable and have instead promised an approach that will 'maintain existing homes, return empty properties to use and deliver genuinely affordable homes while respecting the borough’s architectural heritage.' The surprising development follows a change in control at the Council after the May local elections, with the Green Party winning the most seats.
The council was previously taking forward their Estate Renewal Programme through the development company Homes for Lambeth. The 2022 Kerslake Review recommended closing down the company and the programme was brought back in-house under direct council control.
The pair of post-war social housing schemes have been C20's Risk List since 2017 and 2021 respectively, and were the subject of several unsuccessful listing applications by the Society as far back as 2016.
The Society's Director, Catherine Croft, commented:
"We are overjoyed that good sense has finally prevailed. Both estates show post-war social housing at its most humane and sensitive; understated yet intelligently detailed and making the most of beautiful, verdant sites.
While the work of Camden architect Neave Brown has long been celebrated and recognised with numerous listing designations and conservation areas, the work of Ted Hollamby and his team at Lambeth (including Rosemary Stjernstedt, Roger Westman, and Charles Attwood) has been bafflingly overlooked.
Not only are these buildings of great historic interest, but they are much loved, practical homes which could serve as exemplar for today’s housing crisis. They now need to be appropriately upgraded and cared for, so they can continue to can continue to serve and bring pleasure to future generations."

Huh. Sounds like Andy Burnham broke a solemn pledge. Wonder where he got that idea from?
Literally a Year ago @andyburnham sat with @MassiveAttackUK and signed the Fossil Fuel non-proliferation treaty "to end, coal, oil and gas and hold polluters accountable"
Today he has just signed off a brand new Gas-field in the North Sea.
Shameful

What changed @Miatsf ?
If it was wrong when you were trying to get elected. It's wrong when you're in power.
In the middle of an energy crisis, homegrown gas has a role to play in our energy security as we transition to net zero.
We’ll also invest North Sea revenues in renewables and other low-carbon projects.

Today's decision by Labour to approve new drilling in the North Sea is climate vandalism.
It's a betrayal of all of our futures, and Labour has abandoned all credibility in the fight against climate change.
This is a victory for Shell over the people.

The Labour Government is not serious about the Climate Emergency and has bowed to pressure from Donald Trump and the fossil fuels industry.
Shameful

Ed has never threatened the Labour Party with non-cooperation for facilitating and enabling a genocide, arresting pensioners for holding signs, or overseeing new restrictions on the right to peaceful protest... despite being the Party of civil liberties. Why is that?
Seems to me the whole political establishment is telling on itself. A motion is a red line, but genocide isn't.

I will take no moral lectures from a party that is aiding and abetting a genocide

The first 100 days of Lambeth's first-ever Green council have seen change: bringing empty council homes back into use, auditing council finances, standing with Buy Back Brixton and with trans and migrant residents. Local gov can do a lot! It could do more if it was funded enough.

“The status quo right now is a one state, an apartheid state, where Palestinians and Israelis don’t have equal rights”.
When I’ve travelled around the West Bank, interviewing settlers and Palestinians, this reality has been clear. Yet I don’t think I’ve ever heard a senior Western politician say it. Thank you @zackpolanski. Hearing a truth long denied is deeply moving.
"Do you think Israel has a right to exist?"
@ZackPolanski is spot on. No state has a right to exist. Did Rhodesia? Does the UK?
And this was🎯"The status quo right now is a one state apartheid state where Palestinians do not have the same freedom as Israelis, & that's racist"
I'd like to educate @DaleVince and @Jo_Coburn on the right for states to exist under International Law. #bbclaurak🧵

Israelis have an absolute right to live in safety, dignity and freedom.
So do Palestinians.
Neither people's rights should depend on maintaining a particular nationalist ideology, political system or system of domination.
5/5
Criticising Zionism, opposing occupation, apartheid and genocide or challenging the political foundations of a state is fundamentally the opposite denying people's right to exist.
We must confront antisemtism and racism of all kinds wherever it appears, while defending Palestinian rights and equality for all.
Human rights belong to people. They must never be conditional on political ideology.
