A return to the old juridical process is long overdue, as John Vennari (RIP) wrote over a decade ago: catholicfamilynews.com/blog/…
Has the Catholic Church become too quick to declare people saints? I didn't have Pope Leo addressing this issue on my bingo card! At a conference organised by the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints on 21 October, the Pope has just raised the question of historical truth, the integrity of the canonisation process & the danger of allowing convenient narratives to obscure the evidence. Pope Leo emphasised the importance of rigorous historical investigation in establishing the authenticity of a candidate's holiness. His insistence upon credible testimony, serious scholarship & fidelity to historical truth is particularly interesting given the considerable changes to the Church's canonisation process over recent decades. The most significant reform came under St John Paul II in 1983, when Divinus Perfectionis Magister substantially streamlined the procedures for investigating causes of beatification and canonisation. The reforms were intended to make the process more effective without sacrificing the necessary scrutiny, but they also helped make it possible for causes to proceed considerably more quickly than had previously been customary. Subsequently Pope Francis made further changes, controversially exercising his papal authority to dispense with the usual requirement for a second recognised miracle when canonising John XXIII in 2014. When we consider the remarkable number of recent popes who have been canonised: John XXIII, Paul VI, John Paul I and John Paul II have all been raised to the altars within a relatively short period, three of them during Francis's pontificate, there is surely a legitimate question about whether the relatively rapid canonisation of successive modern pontiffs risks creating the impression that the Church is endorsing particular ecclesiastical eras, programmes or legacies, rather than simply recognising the heroic virtue of individual men? It is a certainly a question that has been asked! Canonisation is a judgement concerning sanctity, not a retrospective endorsement of every decision made during a pontificate. The temptation is to treat the canonisation of a pope as proof that his theological judgements, pastoral policies or approach to Church governance must necessarily have been correct. The Church has never taught that canonisation confers retrospective infallibility upon a saint's every action or opinion. Saints can make mistakes, exercise poor judgement and leave behind complicated historical legacies, as Oscar Wilde famously said, "every Saint has a past, every sinner has a future". Individual holiness does not depend upon pretending otherwise. This is precisely why historical scholarship is so important. Our faith is an intrinsically historical religion, we believe that God entered human history, that Christ lived, died and rose again, and that His grace continues to transform real human beings living in particular times and circumstances. Historical investigation should therefore never be regarded as a threat to Catholic faith, accuracy serves the truth upon which that faith depends. I think this is what makes Leo's intervention so interesting because there's no doubt that confidence in ecclesiastical institutions has been badly damaged, so his emphasis upon historical truth and credible evidence is particularly welcome. Is he criticising his predecessors or signalling an intention to reverse their reforms? He has said nothing to establish either conclusion, nevertheless, his remarks invite us to reflect upon whether the Church's procedures always provide sufficient historical perspective and whether the desire to recognise holiness quickly can sometimes sit uneasily alongside the need for thorough investigation. Another point here is that the holiness of a pope is not the same thing as the success of his pontificate. A man may possess heroic virtue while making decisions whose prudence historians and theologians will continue to debate for generations. If we genuinely believe that truth and sanctity are inseparable, then rigorous historical scrutiny should be the norm, even when it challenges cherished assumptions or convenient narratives. The saints belong to the whole Church, not to competing ecclesiastical factions and their witness is far too important to be reduced to an argument about which side of today's ecclesiastical controversies has been vindicated.

WHAT IS TRADITION? Earlier this week, @EWTNews reported that a new subcommittee of the Vatican’s International Theological Commission (ITC) has been tasked with studying and clarifying the nature of Sacred Tradition: ewtnnews.com/vatican/pope-le… They could all save themselves a lot of time and energy by simply reading and teaching On Divine Tradition (1875) by Cardinal Johann Baptist Franzelin and Tradition and the Church (1928) by Msgr. George Agius. More recent editions of these two classics feature a foreword by Fr. Chad Ripperger: tanbooks.com/products/books/… sentradpress.com/product/on-… For some crucial quotes from these books, see here: youtube.com/live/JR6oL5guaHk…

Today in Rome, Pope Leo XIV received a delegation from @AJCGlobal and reaffirmed that “the Church does not tolerate anti-Semitism and fights against it, on the basis of the Gospel itself.” vatican.va/content/leo-xiv/e… Does he realize the AJC promotes the IHRA definition of “antisemitism,” which implies that the New Testament itself is “antisemitic”? ajc.org/the-working-definiti… holocaustremembrance.com/res…

Thoughts. We should also remember Proverbs 18:17: “He who states his case first seems right, until the other comes and examines him.” First, if this suspension is to examine Fr. Ripperger and some medical advice issue, then how hard is it for the bishop to say that. This is easy. And calling it a "media fast" isn't consistent with that concern. So we have a case of "even if the medical investigation thing is true," then why doesn't the familial Church give that simple explanation. That they need time to fine tune protocol on medical advise for exorcist patients and their relationship to the psychiatrists with which exorcists collaborate. They don't even have to be accusatory. They can just say they want to make sure Fr. Ripperger, who has a particular demonic target on his back, is also following the best protocols and they all agreed to take a year to sort it out. This is not hard. Second, the bishops certainly don't care about the medical risks involved with priests encouraging dangerous sexual activity - of which there is no shortage. So people who point out hypocrisy and selective application of sanctions against more traditional priests versus heterodox have every right to point that out because the pattern reveals it as a relevant factor. Third, Fr. Ripperger in interviews has specifically stated he is not a medical professional and ultimately defers to medical professionals on medication overuse. For instance, with @MattGaspers on January 19, 2026: "I'm not a psychiatrist. I'm not a medical doctor. So, if you're thinking about getting off (such meds), go talk to your doctor." (46:10) youtube.com/live/XPly1p3EuDs… And he has made similar sentiments even prior to the March 2025 letter from Bishop Aquila. In the April 11, 2024 episode Fr. Ripperger discusses with Gaspers the whole system in which they have collaborated with trained "Mental Health Care Professionals who are going to actually assist us in doing Diagnostics" (07:50) youtube.com/live/BIPcfIaVweQ… So, the bishop has sown confusion by being opaque. That will remain the case even if a hiatus was prudent. And second, there is likely a lot more to play out with regard to psychologists and how they collaborate with exorcists.

So, @VivekGRamaswamy thinks that Israel is “a divine nation” that should destroy its neighbors, “abandon the myth of a two-state solution,” and ethnically cleanse Gaza if it so chooses. I didn't realize that this “Chris Jackson” buffoon used a pseudonym. While I agree with @AmericanReform_ that there can be legitimate reasons to use a pseudonym, I agree with you that if someone is going to do so, he has no business playing the tough guy.
