Score! My favorite fish to try and catch in the canals when I was younger. I always used worms, but tough to beat shiners. Nice job!

@53rdWRS Hurricane Hunters currently flying into Hurricane Lowell at 8AM HST Friday. They are getting valuable data to go into computer models and to use for the 11AM HST NHC update. Look at this track and loop right through the eye! @weatherchannel @HurricaneLowell #Hawaii

“It’s Summer, it’s Hot.” We hear ya, but this is no ordinary heat. Several all-time heat records are likely to be broken across the Eastern U.S. this weekend, with triple-digit heat up and down the East Coast. Stay hydrated, have a cooling plan and #StayCoolforthe4th

Very cool!
Time for an aerial tour of Mount St. Helens! Summer has arrived, and that means field work in the Cascades. On Wednesday, June 24, teams from the Cascades Volcano Observatory were at Mount St. Helens to swap batteries, upgrade GPS sites, solidify solar power systems, remove legacy equipment, and survey river channels for changes. Along the way, one of the field crews captured this aerial video of the crater of Mount St. Helens. The helicopter flies up the western arm of the Crater Glacier, past the 1980-86 lava dome, and then swings to the left around the still-steaming 2004-08 lava dome to get a view to the north out of the crater at Johnston Ridge, Spirit Lake, and Mount Rainier in the distance. Cascades Volcano Observatory update for Friday, June 19, 2026: All volcanoes in the Cascade Range of Oregon and Washington were at normal background levels of activity for the last week. Small earthquakes were detected at Mount Rainier and Mount St. Helens. usgs.gov/programs/VHP/volcan… 📽️: USGS video from helicopter flight into Mount St. Helens Crater by Marco Bagnardi, June 24, 2026.

Wild!
Michael Bianculli from Walpole was strolling along Castle Island today and spotted these in the water Likely wake vortices from a landing aircraft flying low above of the water on approach to Logan. They come down off the tips of the planes wings

Since January 14, 2026, total snow cover in Colorado has been at a record low in the 26-year-satellite record. Stay current on snow conditions with NSIDC's Snow Today. nsidc.org/snow-today/snow-vi…

California’s snowpack is melting fast. Here’s why that matters for fire risk. An early-season heat wave is rapidly melting snow across the Sierra Nevada weeks ahead of normal. Right now, that snowmelt is helping keep vegetation moist. But less snow = earlier drying. Snowpack acts as a natural reservoir, slowly releasing water into spring and early summer. When it melts too quickly, grasses and brush dry out sooner. Experts warn that early snow loss increases the chance of earlier and longer periods of fire activity, especially if warm, dry conditions continue. What to watch for: ➤ Rapid snow loss in the Sierra ➤ Warming temperatures and wind ➤ Grasses curing earlier than normal California sees fire year-round, but these conditions can bring peak fire activity sooner. Now is the time to get ready: ➡ Clear defensible space ➡ Harden your home ➡ Make a wildfire action plan ➡ Pack a go-bag #CALFIRE #FireSafety #ReadySetGo #SierraNevada #Snowpack @CA_DWR

Our Trenton snow observer photographed these yesterday... inverse snow tracks! The snow was walked in when it was changing to sleet (ice pellets) back on January 25th, then the footprints filled up with sleet, and now the softer snow around them is melting faster than the sleet.

This is great to see. Progress is being made on intensity and RI forecasts. Kudos to @NHC_Atlantic forecasters and the teams behind the models!
Given higher than usual confidence of rapid intensification (RI) from analyses of an exceptionally favorable environment & with the aid of newer hurricane models (HAFS) & Google DeepMind, NHC was able to skillfully predict Melissa's RI days in advance.
