Would be cool to see that Roman Catholic Religious Orders like the Teutonic Order, the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre, or the Sovereign Military Order of Malta take an active interest in longevity science and medicine.

Hinton got it wrong. It’s actually okay if it has the desire and wants to kill you. It just must not be able to kill you. In the case of the tiger this means chaining it, pulling its teeth, and taking off its claws.
Hinton is giving the Gödel lecture at TU Wien and this is our current state according to him:

Hope we will also get war mammoths to secure land border, and war whales to secure sea borders.

It’s a great day for science without boundary. At any given time in civilizational history we should fully lean into what science is capable in accomplishing. The markets then will price it accordingly and and see if it’s wanted.

Enhanced animals are a pretty good start to get to enhanced humans.

The real issue is that academic institutions are getting involved in personal lives. If you’re an adult you’re free to date whoever you want. Be it strangers, friends, or colleagues. As a grown up you shall reap the good as well as the bad of it. Any workplace policy that gets involved in someone’s love life is overstepping.
A Massachusetts jury has awarded biologist David Sabatini $6 million—plus interest—in damages in his defamation case against Kristin Knouse, a former colleague at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research. The physician-scientist’s claims led one research institution to fire Sabatini and precipitated his resignations from Whitehead and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he was a tenured faculty member. "The most valuable thing in the industry is data on how the human body will respond." @impetusgrants' round on datasets enabling AI to reason about aging and disease will fund ~50 projects to proactively get this data ready for new models. >9/15M raised, tell your friends to donate so we can get going.
Dialectic 60: Patrick Hsu! @pdhsu & @arcinstitute are combining biology, engineering, and AI to turn a sci-fi future into reality. Patrick got expelled from college at 13, returned at 15, later worked on early CRISPR breakthroughs, and teamed up with @SKonermann & @patrickc to found Arc. He works 3 jobs: core investigator at Arc, professor at Stanford, and venture partner at @thrivecapital. For all his intensity and ambition, he carries a lightness and boldness that is contagious. Actually a sensible proposal
Universities should really give alumni lifetime access to the library. We paid enough for tuition, the least you can do is let us keep reading.

— This is the Amber Heard type who destroyed David Sabatini’s life and career. He may have gotten a big judgement against her from the jury, but he will likely have to fight to see even a penny of it. Meanwhile she gets to continue her illustrious career at MIT as a prof with her own lab. Disgusting.

Instead of using European money for war efforts or lifestyle NGOs that embezzle money abroad Europe should spend 100 billion dollars on AI & data infrastructure.
Should Europe leave frontier AI to the Americans and the Chinese? The idea has gained ground in Europe. It is a fundamental mistake. Build or surrender: for now, the choice is still ours. Full article below.
