Eight years in the Obama West Wing, through Libya, the Saudi war in Yemen, the 2012 and 2014 Gaza wars, Syria, the Russia reset and the policy process only became morally unbearable once he stopped being the one doing it.
This from @brhodes is probably the best description of how the Democratic foreign policy elite has gone about the mundane perpetuation of US power in the post-Obama era.

why are so many tenant unions so deeply anti-tenant? it’s sad you want to immiserate renters so much with this nonsense
"Just build more" isn't a solution to housing when no one can afford the homes that are being built.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
New housing supply has been shown in rigorous studies to reduce or slow rent growth both citywide and locally by expanding options and freeing up existing units, even if new builds are initially higher-priced.

We asked Xavier Becerra if he identifies as a NIMBY or a YIMBY and I am still dying over his answer. Great interview by @SophiaBollag, who tried to get him to say literally anything substantive.
France continues to innovate developing the worst possible economic policies on the European continent.
‼️ French lawmakers voted for an internet traffic tax that the makers of VLC say would cost them more than €1M a year.
Content providers would pay €0.055 for every gigabyte sent to French users, as counted by ISPs. Its Socialist authors expect €10B a year.
The government opposed it, warning that about half the bill would fall on smaller providers, many of them French.
It passed 11 votes to 10, with 35 of 577 deputies present.

Incredible. Endless stories about young people feeling disillusioned, dooming about not being able to even buy a house etc, and yet there is no politician of any party (afaik) that will actually do anything to reduce the boomers’ slice of the pie.
.@AbdulElSayed thinks property tax for seniors should be frozen
I think its generational warfare and that they should sell their houses if they can't afford them. He concedes I'm 'theoretically correct' but practically wrong

Increasingly of the view that this administration should be the final straw for the polygraph.
Congress should statutorily prohibit the DoD and IC from administering them.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has fired the Pentagon's top military planner, a Pentagon official told CBS News late Wednesday.
Army Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia is the latest in a series of generals to be ousted. The firing comes even as President Trump is weighing renewed strikes on Iran in the eight-month-long war.
The Pentagon official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive personnel matters, said Sylvia was accused of misconduct for leaking classified information related to the Iran war and the Russia-Ukraine war.
Sylvia failed three polygraph tests about sharing classified information with the press, the official said, adding that the case has been referred to the Department of Justice.

Millennials want nothing more than special treatment for doing the basics of existing
Congratulations. Everyone has avoided the gentrification of the NYC school system. This is obviously considered a great success.
Today my office has released a major new report on student enrollment in NYC.
We found that k-12 enrollment in our public schools has fallen by 187k since 2013, with a projected decline of an additional 128k students by 2034.
As total enrollment declines, NYCPS is serving a student population with growing needs. The number of students with disabilities is increasing. In the most recent school year, approximately 73% of students were in poverty and 14% were homeless or living in temporary housing.
Our report finds the drop in enrollment is driven by declining births and families with children leaving NYC, with a particularly notable drop in public-school enrollment as students transition from elementary to middle school.
These trends have massive implications for our schools that we have only barely begin to grapple with. My hope is that this report will spur a long overdue conversation about what the era of falling student enrollment means for NYC, and what we can do to reverse or slow it. 🧵

wtf
this guy just had Claude Sonnet 5 perform brain surgery on a living mouse
the goal was to treat the mouse's epilepsy so it would stop having so many seizures.
here's what Claude did:
> it looked at 19 possible treatments and picked one that boosts the brain's natural calming chemical
> it chose where to inject it based on where these seizures are thought to start
> it worked out the exact injection point by averaging three research papers
> it lowered the needle 4.3 millimeters into the mouse's brain
> it injected a 20,000th of a teaspoon of the treatment over five minutes
> it checked the live camera 32 times to watch for things like bleeding
and the mouse woke up and recovered well!
interestingly, Opus 5.5 and Opus 5 both refused the task because it involved real biology
so Sonnet 5 got the job.
and as far as the researcher knows it's the first time an AI has picked a treatment and then injected it into the brain of a living mammal.
Last night an AI agent performed brain surgery on a mouse.
We gave it 19 gene therapy vectors in a spreadsheet, a mouse model of epilepsy, access to a motorize surgery rig with cameras and one goal: reduce seizures.
It picked the drug. It picked the brain region. It derived the coordinates from three papers. Then it drove the stereotaxic arms into the brain and injected 250 nanolitres while watching the entry site through the rig camera for bleeding.
A licensed vet gated every irreversible step and held a physical kill switch to stop the AI agent.
Thread on what it decided, what it saw, and the moment it refused to let me override it.
[Writing this on the spot out of excitement, but I've been 18hrs in front of my laptop coding and coordinating this, so keeping it brief and descriptive, more cohesive thoughts on this soon...]

I think a defining thing for my general outlook is that I’ve got a billionaire/multi millionaires and poor people in my family
After trying to understand how each person got to their current position I’ve come to the conclusion that poor whites just don’t have that dog in them
But every poor white person I’ve met has the same traits as my uncles/grandparents on my Dad’s side. They’re lazy, impulsive, think everything is a scam so why try, and that bettering their station in life isn’t a good idea as they crave simplicity and poverty is simple/basic
