buddy got outta a six year situationship by blaming a $9 tax and the woman involved harbors no resentment and is instead talking about how masculine he is for not paying said tax or getting on the subway, i got real tears in my eyes LMAO
I’d been dating an MTA man off & on over a period of like 6 years. We basically stopped seeing each other bc of Congestion Pricing. He already pays it plus bridge tolls to get from his home in East NY to the depot in Harlem where he works. Coming to visit me inside the zone a few times per week as well, not to mention driving for our formerly frequent weekend getaways to AC became a hardship & no way he’d ever let me pay instead

lol my lawn mower is only used 1x a week. Should I rent one from OpenAI instead?
Also, who caused the DRAM shortage? It wasn't consumers...
sam: local inference is a terrible allocation of scarce resources
“a lot of people want local inference, and somehow they assume that the problem is solved now because we have open-source models, we're going to be able to run them on our computers, and so we're not going to need all the stuff in the data centre
but from a global allocation perspective, actually it's quite terrible to have everybody, like, have a bunch of the world's limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer and being used five percent of the time
you want maximum utilisation in the cloud if you're trying to deal with this very supply-constrained environment
somehow many people's intuition is the opposite of that”

The Ethan Klein drama not all that interesting to me because I don’t know any of those people, but having to become increasingly pro-Israel to distract your former IDF wife from your adultery would be a pretty good late era Jeff subplot on Curb Your Enthusiasm

As someone who has criticised Haidt’s arguments, this is especially worrying. It poisons a debate that needs good-faith disagreement, and makes critiques look suspect...
Meta had an internal PR plan to try and discredit Jon Haidt because he was a critic of social media.
Meta was going to recruit academics, like Andrew Gelman, to write take down pieces. They were trying to turn academics against one another through a "whisper strategy".
This is a very serious problem for open academic debate. If academics who share negative evidence about a platform are targeted by campaigns to smear our credibility, we are in deep, deep trouble.
This creates a very serious conflict of interest for anyone who is paid to do this.

Brazil’s results tonight are a big endorsement for the idea that every country should have a second “are you you sure about that” election a couple weeks after the first one for the important stuff

James Talarico having to come back to win his primary against a pathological narcissist who would spend the campaign actively sabotaging him while running against a three-time statewide winner in a R+14 state and being outspent by a trillion dollars.
NEW: I have finished the Official 2026 Democratic Campaign Tier List by going over the party's truly great campaigns this year. There were so many that I needed to add an S+ category. Once and for all: what was the best Democratic campaign of 2026? ettingermentum.news/p/the-of…

I don't know that this is a helpful ad but "hugs should be mutual" seems like a reasonable position to me.

Ramaswamy’s bet is that Donald Trump has fundamentally transformed politics and the old rules no longer apply. Voters are cynical, the news media has a shadow of its influence and boundaries are for RINOS. Might makes right. Oh, and as he has told Republicans, the ad tested well with voters, I’ve been informed by a GOP official.
Count me as skeptical — and not just because Ramaswamy is loathsome, his conduct appalling and the spot an act of self-sabotage once people learn the facts.
Voters want something better, and they’re about to make that clear, in Ohio and beyond, next month.
Campus climate surveys generally aren't great, but every time this topic comes up I'm reminded that a bunch of conservatives think forcibly kissing or groping someone shouldn't count.

Call me crazy but I don't think Democrats should be supporting online child exploitation just because it polls well
There's a lot of risible stuff here, but this has got to be one of the worst instances of "sanewashing" I've ever seen.

ICE run over U.S. citizen riding his bike—break his arm.
Agents handcuff him behind his back without calling paramedics.
They inflict even more injuries—send him to the hospital in serious condition.
Then agents detain another U.S. citizen—for yelling at them on the sidewalk.
Man with the broken arm's daughter says he was hit on his e-bike by an unmarked car.
He was then tased twice and pinned to the ground—currently receiving treatment at the hospital.
Multiple ICE vehicles were running through stop signs—speeding the wrong way down one-way streets.
All on a weekend afternoon with kids playing outside.
Incident occurred near the intersection of East 56th Street & Elm Avenue in Long Beach, California.
