25 years ago, they woke up to what they thought would be an ordinary day. Within hours, everything changed. And without hesitation, they went into the rubble. Alongside their handlers, these extraordinary dogs searched through the devastation of 9/11 - hour after hour, day after day, they worked tirelessly to find any survivors of the Twin Towers. Any… Their determination, their loyalty, their diligence and their love - even now, it is incredibly moving. Some would carry the effects of that work for the rest of their lives. Today, every one of those dogs has gone. But what they did must never be forgotten. To the dogs of 9/11, and to the remarkable men and women who worked beside them - we thank you for your service, your courage and your sacrifice. 25 years on - we remember you. We always will. 🇺🇸🐾

🐶 We wanted to give you an update on RPD Sky, who retired back in February! She is absolutely loving retired life and yesterday featured on the mid-morning show at BBC Radio Merseyside with Inspector Phil McManus, who heads up our Dog Section, and Martin O’Neill from ‘The Retired Police Dog Benevolent Fund for Merseyside’ charity. Sky, Phil and Martin were invited to the studio to talk about the amazing work of our police dogs in Merseyside, Sky’s career, what happens to police dogs when they retire, and the vital support provided by The Retired Police Dog Benevolent Fund for Merseyside. She may be retired, but you can’t take the detection skills out of Sky! She was full of beans and very keen to investigate all corners of the studio space – lots to see, hear and of course, smell! Sky was good as gold during the interview, although she was keen to see what was happening on the mixing desk and didn’t want to miss anything 👀 Our police dogs play a crucial role in keeping communities safe – from tracking suspects, supporting officers in dangerous situations, and protecting the public. Our dogs are part of the policing family. They’re exceptionally well cared for throughout their service, with dedicated handlers who build a strong bond with them and ensure their welfare comes first. During the interview, Martin said 🗣️ “Police dogs give years of loyal service, and when they retire, they deserve the very best care. Our charity exists to support them in that next stage of their lives. “When retired, police dogs don’t receive a pension, and vet bills can be significant. We help those who care for the dogs in their retirement by contributing towards those costs so they can get the treatment they need.” The @MerseysideRPD is run by unpaid volunteers: All money raised is by public donations. The charity has been established to assist those who take on the care of a retired police dog in helping them pay for veterinary bills, as well as supporting the dog in its retirement 💙

Good folks of #Scotland #Aberdeenshire , we need your eyes and assistance to find PD Kilo. He's quite distinctive. Please do report any sightings you may have. He's a young, energetic and driven spaniel, so could be anywhere. @PSOSDogs
Police Scotland's asking people in Aberdeenshire to look out for PD Kilo - a 4-year-old drug detection dog who went missing on Monday in the Cairnie, Huntly area after a seizure. Officers say it's out of character for him to run off and ask anyone who spots him to get in touch.

We wish our very own PD Annie the best retirement. It's been a pleasure having her in our team since 2019 and we will miss her so much ❤️
Today is a special day as PD Annie 🐶 will work her last ever shift, before her formal retirement next week. Annie is 7-years-old and licenced as a General Purpose Dog for the force in December 2019. She then went one step further, becoming a Firearms Support Dog in January 2022 🥳 She has had so many stand out moments throughout her career. Three hours into her very first independent shift, Annie located and detained a male hiding in a garden shed who was responsible for an attack involving a machete. PD Annie LOVES working but when she has some down time, she enjoys nothing more than playing with the other PD’s she lives with, often being a maternal figure to them, teaching them manners and respect from an early age ❤️ Speaking to Annie’s handler, she told us that Annie is a “bright and intelligent” dog who “always responded appropriately to the humans around her”. Her handler said: “Whether it be detaining burglars or meeting school children and letting them stroke and cuddle her, she has such a positive impact on the community in many ways.” Annie was “fiercely loyal” to her handler and together they were a fantastic team🤝 Following her retirement, Annie will remain living with her handler and has already expressed a keen interest in relaxing on the garden sofa! We wish Annie all the best and thank her for her incredible service to the force 💕 Do you like seeing content like this from us? 👀 Let us know what you want to see on our channels by filling out the National Social Media Survey we are currently taking part in. Remembering @merseysidepolice dog Ace, who crossed the rainbow bridge 2 March 2020 from a sudden illness Ace was a great police dog, and he had the unique art of being able to escape from any kennel he was placed in... he should have been named Houdini. Ace was originally found as a stray wandering the streets at 15 weeks old, but his life would turn around, and he would pass out of police dog training at 15 months old. At 15 weeks, he was discovered walking the streets in Lancashire as a puppy 2014. Had he not found a home after a week, he could have been put to sleep. But Cefni GSD Rescue in Sheffield saved the day and took him in. It quickly became apparent to staff that he had the drive and alertness required for a life of public service with the police, so when officers from Merseyside Police's Dogs Section called four months ago to see if the centre had any suitable dogs, Aces future was secured He went on to have a short career and 2 hooman guardians but was a great asset to his team You will be remembered 💙🐾🥀 @K9memorialUk @MerseysideRPD @MerseyPolice @bbcmerseyside
