1.) 💎🧵 In July 2023 the FBI came to the home of Vanessa Sivadge, a nurse at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston. By her account they were there about the whistleblower who exposed it. She became one herself. Ken Paxton's settlement pays her $1,715,200.

Jane and John Doe are the parents of a senior at a public high school in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Last December 10 a staff member's email about a lab experiment called their daughter by a boy's name. Three more emails followed. One tried to recall the first. One put her real name back. One said the first had gone "to the wrong addresses." Pressed, the staff member admitted lying. Their daughter had asked for the name. Every student had been asked for a preferred name, then met one on one about pronouns. No parent was told. Policy allowed it, the staff member said. May 1, a field trip roster went to every family on the trip. Their daughter wasn't on it. The boy's name was, next to the Does' surname. The school's first story: a different student with the same last name. Then the staff member admitted no such student existed. The Does asked for the records. The assistant principal said the conversation would go "around and around." The principal, in June, by email: the emails and staff notes would need "appropriate legal process, including a subpoena." They sued in July. Tuesday the United States sued too, in federal court in Maryland. Harmeet Dhillon runs the Civil Rights Division at the Justice Department. Her words: "Parents should not be lied to, stonewalled, or branded as 'safety concerns' when they ask to see education records." The district rewrote its rule in August and says it takes its privacy obligations seriously. The complaint quotes the rewrite. Its point: a principal can still shut parents out on a "genuine safety concern," and a parent still has no way to appeal that call. A district of 84,000 students now has to tell a federal judge why two parents were told to get a subpoena to see what its staff wrote about their own daughter. 💎

Oleshky is a town across the Dnipro River from Kherson that Russia took on the first day of the 2022 invasion. 24,000 people before the war. About 2,000 left, mostly elderly, around 50 children, short of food and medicine for months. On Friday the White House said the First Lady had both sides agreeing to stop shooting there on October 29. The guns went quiet Tuesday instead. Her statement: "accelerated two days ahead of schedule to protect the safety of civilians." The zone grew too, beyond the town and into the Kherson region, so the aid convoys have a road in. Both sides say it is holding. Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine's human rights ombudsman and its chief negotiator, at 5:30 PM Kyiv: "No violations of the ceasefire have been recorded by either side." Russia's Defense Ministry says its forces stopped firing on the Kherson axis at the same hour. Demining started at once. Aid goes in October 29. Anyone who wants out can leave from October 30. It holds through November 1. Ukraine asked for weeks. Pope Leo called Putin and asked on October 16. The First Lady is the one who came back with a date, and then with an earlier one.
