Talk of red blood cells at high altitude e.g. bbc.co.uk/sport/football/art…
This confuses two processes.
1. Altitude to⬆️ red blood cells = ⬆️performance at SEA LEVEL only.
2. Acclimatising to altitude ⬆️ the amount we breathe for O2 level (HVR).
🏴 need no. 2

Free Weights or Machines… Does It Matter?
One of the longest-running debates in the strength-training world is whether free weights or machines build more muscle. A 2023 meta-analysis published in BMC Sports Science, Medicine and Rehabilitation, pooled the available evidence and ...
The authors analyzed 13 randomized trials involving 1,073 adults who trained for at least 6 weeks. When they compared the two modalities head-to-head, there was no meaningful difference in muscle hypertrophy. There was no meaningful difference in countermovement jump performance. And there was no meaningful difference in isometric strength. Both modalities produced significant, comparable gains in muscle size and function.
If your goal is to preserve muscle, build strength, and protect your healthspan as you age, the practical implication is simple... Use what you have access to. Use what you enjoy. Use what does not cause pain or fear of injury.
If machines get you to the gym four days a week and free weights leave you intimidated at the rack... the choice is obvious.
The best modality is the one you will actually use... consistently for years to decades.

The #EnhancedGames package was a tepid, hollow affair. Missed its mark by more than its doped athletes missed the world records that had been so hyped. An illegal swimsuit was star of the show. I hope the anti-climax hurts the bottom line of this grift. Or they can sell swimsuits

Nice idea and great study. But given we can’t get patients to take their meds, what chances do we have at getting them into a heat suit 4 times a week for an hour? All while our built environment does everything it can to remove thermal stress from our lives (e.g. air con)

Together with @ResearchWales, we’re supporting cardiovascular research in Wales through the National Cardiovascular Research Network @NCRN_Wales
This significant £3m agreement means Welsh researchers will be able to investigate key areas such as irregular heartbeat, heart disease and vascular ageing.
With a launch event this evening at @SeneddCymru, we look forward to celebrating our new collaboration.

NEW: we may have passed peak obesity 🎉📈📉🙏
In what might be one of the most significant trends I have ever charted, the US obesity rate fell last year.
The media are generally doing a poor job of reporting on this issue. But the biggest failing is leadership from the IOC and the lack of a credible boxing gov body. Creates room for misinformation, and the athlete takes the worst of it.
Steve’s thread below is a great summary.

So basically an SNP day designed to expose Labour divisions and undermine Starmer ended up with a Labour amendment securing the first Commons call for a ceasefire on Gaza. No wonder SNP and Tories furious. Starmer really is a lucky general.
Great thread on our perception of and appetite for risk in our personal and professional lives.
I’ve recognised mine changing as I age/have a family. But interesting to see that shift happening on a national scale.
The bigger the challenge, the more ambitious the solution.

Stop saying we send too many people to university, and start saying we’re not creating enough graduate-quality jobs. End of rant.
