something that makes me sad, not in a trad way, is that public buildings used to be designed to be places that were both functional and served as celebrations of art and architecture. they were supposed to feel important and grand.

I can't believe this. I'm a massive Nathan Fielder fan and I spent months auditioning for a singing competition thinking it was a fake metatextual element of a new TV show he was making. It turns out it was a genuine singing competition with no comedic framing whatsoever
Every single new piece of AI technology is like โyooo check out this new way weโre breaking the social fabric and reality and making it harder for you to trust anything and everything besides what you see right in front of you with your own eyes ๐ค๐ค๐คโ
Evil ass fucks

One thing that's been really bugging me lately about AI writing, not because it's AI but just because it's bad writing, is the negation of stuff that nobody was saying or ever really would say.
"Every ingredient has a job on a steam table."
On the surface, this seems like an informative statement, but it's completely immaterial. Every ingredient in something always has a job. Otherwise why would it be there? The whole construction is a waste of your attention.
The scrambled eggs at a hotel breakfast are 19% water, and they're dyed.
A lot of hotels and cafeterias pour them from a carton of Papetti's Breakfast Blend. The spec sheet reads whole eggs, 19% water, then under 2% of salt, xanthan gum, citric acid, annatto color and natural butter flavor. Papetti's is part of Michael Foods, one of the biggest egg processors in the country.
Every ingredient has a job on a steam table. Xanthan gum holds the added water in the egg so it doesn't weep into the pan. Citric acid keeps the eggs from turning gray or green under a heat lamp. Annatto puts back the yolk color the water washed out. The butter flavor is there because nobody is going to add butter. The carton keeps for 98 days in the cooler.
The plain version from the same company is whole eggs, whey, skim milk, xanthan and citric acid, with almost no added water and half the sodium.

We can't brute force compute all possible moves in Go, a static game with a simple 19 x 19 grid, yet somehow people think we're going to simulate a dynamic system of trillions of cells each containing trillions of molecules.
If you had an exponential amount of compute you could solve simulate biology exactly and wouldn't need to run any experiments.
Some of you will think "of course, but that's an unrealistic assumption" and others will think "no, you need experiments even with that much compute. That's just How It's Done".
You would of course need evaluations once you have a solution, but you don't in principle need experiments to find it: Experiments are a way to save compute, dating from a time when it was much more expensive.
And I think the presentation is exponential but real systems aren't irreducibly exponential. AlphaFold worked, after all.

"This writer hundreds or thousands of years ago is speaking directly to me right now" is the absolutely ideal mode of encountering the past. Other ways are more "responsible" but above all we need to remember that these are human beings like ourselves.

whenever someone brings up using AI for creative work, I think about this
what we create also creates us

rewind and save states being default features in official rereleases of retro games is deeply destructive to how their design is perceived and I'm not sure why people don't see that, imagine if they add that shit to dark souls and the majority of people just end up rewinding-

A huge part of this is Framing.
We should have rewind and save states as practice elements... and they should be just that. Practice. Modern rereleases should include these as practice modes/options and have a separate main mode. That'll help the perception of these games.
