Signal's also a nonprofit, not owned by big tech = we're not one bad earnings report away from killing privacy for profit.
As @AGKarlRacine points out, end-to-end encryption is an important tool and we want more people to know about it. WhatsApp is end-to-end encrypted by default. On Messenger, anyone can opt in to encrypted chats and that will become the default setting next year.
