On October 22nd, BBC News reported that ongoing fighting in Moyale Town, along the Ethiopia–Kenya border, had resulted in multiple civilian deaths, the burning of residential homes and commercial properties, and the displacement of hundreds of residents. The fighting began on October 18th following a territorial dispute between the Oromia and Somali regions over the placement of a Somali Region administrative flag in a contested area. Residents reported that the violence intensified on October 21st and 22nd, spreading across Kebele 02 and other parts of the town.
According to BBC interviews, a 13-year-old girl was shot during the initial fighting and subsequently died in hospital, while another resident reported the killing of a 10-year-old child on October 22nd. One resident reported approximately six deaths on Thursday, while a source on the Somali side reported four people killed and 11 injured. Residents also described widespread destruction of homes, sustained gunfire, and security personnel positioned on buildings with sniper rifles and DShK heavy machine guns. The fighting reportedly brought commercial activities to a standstill and forced the closure of the Moyale–Addis Ababa road. The BBC stated that it could not independently verify the casualty figures.
The BBC also cited Reuters and Kenyan humanitarian officials confirming that hundreds of Ethiopians, primarily women and children, had crossed into Kenya seeking safety, while others fled into surrounding forests. Displaced families reportedly faced severe shortages of food and shelter. The Kenya Red Cross said it was assessing humanitarian needs and coordinating assistance for the growing number of displaced civilians arriving in Kenyan Moyale.

His name was Al-Tayeb Al-Hadi Ahmed. He was 16 years old.
Both his parents were dead. He was raising five younger siblings. He owed two measures of sesame and four sacks of sorghum.
He went looking for work near the Sudanese-Egyptian border. He never came home.
His final words to his siblings?
“I forgive you, and I am pleased with you. Please forgive me, too.”
Even as he lay dying, he worried about repaying the sesame he owed.
Sixteen years old. Five younger siblings. A debt measured in sesame.
This is what war and displacement have done to Sudan’s children. Robbed them of their childhoods, forced them to carry unimaginable burdens, and, in Al-Tayeb’s case, stolen their lives.
May Allah grant him Jannah and protect the five children he leaves behind.
