Semaglutide - perhaps a new way to counteract adipose tissue-driven systemic aging? This new preprint suggests so... – at Campinas, Brasil
The geroscience community has been buzzing, and we finally have informative data on semaglutide (a GLP-1 RA) and epigenetic age! 🧬⏳
After adjusting for inflammation and other factors, a 32-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial found semaglutide significantly decreased epigenetic age (e.g., GrimAge -2.3 years, PhenoAge -4.9 years) in adults with HIV-associated lipohypertrophy.
The likely mechanism? Semaglutide's ability to reduce visceral fat may mitigate "adipose-driven pro-aging signals" and even reverse "obesogenic epigenetic memory."
Big picture: more post-hoc analyses of human clinical trials are crucial for establishing causality in longevity research.
Caution: 1) not yet peer reviewed. 2) Additional validation in HIV negative individuals is needed.

One of the reasons why it is so difficult to maintain weight loss is because adipose issue retains an epigenetic memory of obesity after weight loss.
