Super excited that my last dissertation chapter was just published in Molecular Ecology! We sequenced 800 transcriptomes to see what molecular responses nectar yeast have to priority effects. Check it out!

My next plant-soil feedback theory paper with @raf_dandrea is out in @Ecology_Letters onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/โ€ฆ -We show that our formulation with an explicit conditionable soil variable leads to a richer set of outcomes than both the std. PSF formulation and LV competition. (1/5)

2๏ธโƒฃ If ๐ŸŒก๏ธpH reduces biomass ๐Ÿ“‰ but ๐Ÿ’ฆirrigation increases it ๐Ÿ“ˆ, which sign of interaction would we call the interaction? Synergistic or antagonistic? The answer isโ€ฆ itโ€™s completely arbitrary! ๐Ÿ˜ฒ

[3] Summary โ€“ Synergism occurs when the interaction effect enhances the direction of both factors (i.e., same sign). But when the factors have opposite signs, this definition falls apart! ๐Ÿšซ

Having mostly reviewed stats papers written by ecologists I figured most ecologists were not trained in math notation. Reviewing stats papers written by statisticians has me updating this belief to "everyone should take a second to review math notation." besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiโ€ฆ

Using log(X+1) when estimating population trends is a classic mistakes of many papers in ecology, including famous one published in @Science and @NatureEcoEvo about #insect decline. Why is it a mistake? Because it breaks the interpretability of the slope (trend) as a growth rate.
log(0) = {Drop it, Scale it, Reform it, Invert it, Group it, press it, snap it, work it, quick erase it} or maybe what these authors do instead? @dggoldst academic.oup.com/qje/articleโ€ฆ
